Job Description The Wastewater Utility Technician performs a variety of hands-on semi-skilled and skilled labor tasks involving the cleaning, maintenance, and upkeep of wastewater treatment plant facilities, tanks, and basins. This role is heavily operational and requires strict adherence to safety protocols, including Confined Space Entry and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures. During summer months, approximately 80% of this role's time is dedicated to high-intensity tank and weir cleaning due to heat-accelerated algae blooms. Tasks and Responsibilities: • Performs weir cleaning and removes accumulated debris from first and second-stage finals, including scrubbing algae from walls, pulling weeds, and pressure washing surfaces., • Cleans and maintains Clarifier Tanks across all plants by scrubbing algae from walls, pressure washing, and removing sludge and debris immediately following tank drainage., • Removes sludge, heavy debris, and buildup from the bottom of Aeration Basins, Settling Tanks, Finals, and draft tubes when tanks are drained., • Isolates Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) Channels by setting in stop logs, setting up trash pumps to drain the channel, and cleaning out residual sludge and debris., • Serves as a first responder to safely and efficiently clean up sludge spills across facility grounds., • Operates heavy cleaning equipment, high-pressure washers, and trash pumps in accordance with standard operating and safety procedures., • Strictly follows and executes Confined Space Entry permits and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety protocols prior to entering any tank, basin, or channel. Minimum Knowledge and Abilities: • High School diploma or equivalent., • Resume Required., • One (1) year of experience involving manual labor, facility maintenance, wastewater operations, or industrial cleaning., • Successful completion of a criminal history background check, education and work history verification, and drug screening test., • Valid Driver's License Required. Preferred Requirements: • Possession of or ability to obtain a basic Wastewater Treatment Operator license or related state certification., • Prior OSHA certification in Confined Space Entry and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures., • Experience operating high-pressure industrial power washers and portable trash pumps., • Basic understanding of mechanical or plumbing systems within an industrial utility environment. Working Environment: • Regular exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions, particularly high heat, humidity, and direct sunlight during summer months., • Work is heavily performed in damp, wet, noisy, and odorous environments typical of wastewater treatment facilities., • Frequent work inside confined spaces and close proximity to open industrial tanks and deep water channels. Physical Requirements: • Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move heavy equipment, stop logs, or debris., • Must be able to stand, walk, climb ladders, crawl, squat, kneel, bend, and reach outward or above the shoulder frequently., • Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling or slipping when walking, standing, or crouching on wet, slick, or elevated work surfaces., • Ability to withstand heavy physical demands on the body, including standing or performing repetitive manual scrubbing and pressure washing for most of the workday in high temperatures., • Ability to understand, remember, and strictly apply complex safety regulations, hazardous material rules, and oral or written operational instructions.
