Job DescriptionDescription: JOB OVERVIEW The Initial Testing Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operation and workflow within the Initial Testing department, as well as supervision of all Initial Testing department employees (including Extraction Specialists and EIA Technicians). This position oversees the following processes: order entry, sample preparation, sample extraction using automated liquid handlers, and screening tests performed using enzyme immunoassay instruments. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, exceptional interpersonal skills, developed technical skills, and strong leadership abilities. The Initial Testing Supervisor is responsible for driving efficiency and productivity for the department, as well as ensuring satisfactory employee training, competency assessment, proficiency evaluation, performance management, and documentation. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Oversee and supervise the day-to-day work of the Initial Testing department, and ensure patient samples are analyzed in an appropriate and efficient manner., • Performs the duties of Extraction Specialist, and EIA Technician as needed, • Interview, hire onboard, and direct departmental employees in the performance of their job duties., • Oversee training, cross-training, and continuing education., • Tracks and conduct competency assessments and performance reviews., • Identify employee strengths and encourage appropriate development, assist employees in developing and reaching annual goals., • Effectively delegate laboratory tasks to maximize strengths of employees., • Motivate and utilize employees effectively through fostering a positive, supportive work environment., • Counsel employees when needed in accordance with Ethos policies., • Maintain employee schedules, work assignments, and/or bench rotation., • Track and maintain data and performance indicators on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis., • Ensure skill progression and personal and professional development of Initial Testing employees through timely, effective feedback and formal performance review; making recommendations for salary increases and incentive rewards as needed., • Encourage positive communication and interactions within the department and interdepartmentally to increase collaboration and teamwork., • Effectively troubleshoot interpersonal or performance issues as they arise and understand when to escalate issues to Production Manager or HR., • Schedule and oversee team meetings, as needed, with Initial Testing employees to discuss changes, updates, issues, etc., • Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and company policies; including attendance, dress code, lab safety, and punctuality., • Maintain an appropriate inventory of supplies for the Initial Testing department, notifying the appropriate person when supplies should be ordered., • Effectively troubleshoot issues as they arise with laboratory instruments and equipment., • Ensure completion of daily tasks and delegate additional tasks essential to the process., • Ensure completion of required maintenance, calibration, service, or certifications for all laboratory equipment within the Initial Testing department, and maintaining those records documenting completion as necessary., • Develop and review various analysis reports to track efficiency and productivity., • Take steps to increase efficiency and productivity with processes., • Participate in meetings and a wide variety of special projects., • Assist in method development processes., • Maintain interdepartmental communication and cooperation., • Maintain departmental budget and identify/recommend items for capital purchase., • Execute project management initiatives when necessary., • Work with the Quality Team to maintain quality assurance and quality control programs for the department; as well as identifying new quality initiatives and areas for audit., • Review and/or create SOP’s and forms when needed for the Initial Testing department; maintaining current documents., • Review and sign off on weekly and monthly logs/printouts relating to the lab instruments, equipment, and environment., • Maintain records for all lab equipment, chemicals, MSDS, etc. as needed., • Ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements., • Communicate issues, as needed, with the Production Manager and/or Lab Director in a timely manner., • Document incidents and accidents on the appropriate forms; performing remedial training, if required, to prevent further incidents/accidents., • Ensure completion of employee files (including training checklists) as delegated per the Quality Team., • Follows and enforces all safety, infection control and blood borne pathogen guidelines while maintaining compliance with applicable regulatory programs., • Reviews and signs off on all tracking logs within the Initial Testing department monthly., • Reviews and signs off on new lot studies for EIA reagents, calibrators, and quality controls before implementing changes., • Other duties as assigned Requirements: PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS • Regular and prompt attendance, • Ability to perform work following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensuring the highest quality standards are maintained, • Ability to model, and foster in others, time management, conscientiousness, dedication, self-discipline, accountability, and responsibility, • Must be able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks in a dynamic environment., • Must be able to motivate, coach, and mentor employees for the highest level of performance, • Must be able to delegate and accomplish goals through others, • Maintain composure even in difficult situations to promote positivity and team morale, • Utilizes leadership principles to anticipate and influence change; presenting possible solutions to challenges, • Proficient in ability to operate laboratory instrumentation and computers with scientific software applications, • Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required, • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Toxicology, Biology, Forensic Science, or a similar analytical science field and 2 years of experience; or Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with appropriate national certification, • Leadership or supervisory experience required, • Preference for candidates with familiarity with pipetting, extractions, automated liquid handler experience, EIA operation, and use of well plates, • Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing, • Skilled in data entry with minimal errors, • Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines, • Ability to exercise independent judgement, • Ability to function in a team environment and promote collaboration, • Ability to foster an environment of employee development and collaboration within and amongst departments, • Must be able to work under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, techniques, and well-defined policies, • Work will be performed in a laboratory environment and exposes the incumbent to normal laboratory hazards and chemicals, including biohazard materials, • Work in varying degrees of temperature (heated or air conditioned), • Position requires sitting, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing, • Lab Scientist/Extraction Specialist, • Lab Technician/EIA Technician, • Initial Testing Team Lead
