Job DescriptionSalary: $63 $97 Hourly DOE PEMCCO is seeking a Trackwork Engineer to provide senior technical leadership in the assessment, diagnosis, design, modification, and rehabilitation of railroad and rail transit track systems. In this role, youll transform field observations, inspection findings, condition data, and engineering analyses into practical, maintainable, and constructionready solutions that enhance track performance, safety, lifecycle value, and overall operational reliability. Key Responsibilities: • Perform detailed evaluations of track performance and condition to determine required repairs, rehabilitation strategies, design modifications, or replacement recommendations., • Assess rails, ties, rail fasteners, anchoring systems, special trackwork, contact rail and support systems, ballast, subgrade conditions, and grade crossings for deterioration, failure patterns, and serviceability concerns., • Lead root-cause analysis for recurring defects, rail corrugation, ride quality issues, component wear, stray current concerns, dynamic loading impacts, and other track-related performance problems., • Develop engineering designs, rehabilitation concepts, design calculations, technical memoranda, reports, drawings, and specifications for track modifications, renewals, and improvements., • Support development and refinement of track standards, inspection criteria, maintenance criteria, and technical recommendations for compliance and lifecycle optimization., • Evaluate maintenance practices and recommend improvements related to lubrication, rail profile grinding, wear mitigation, inspection triggers, and long-term service-life extension of track components., • Support value engineering and research into innovative materials, components, methods, and technologies that may reduce maintenance cost, improve ride quality, or mitigate track-related operational issues., • Participate in field inspections, testing, instrumentation efforts, measurement of corrugation or dynamic forces, and validation of existing conditions to support design decisions., • Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and field changes for consistency with design intent and MTA requirements., • Coordinate with civil, structural, geotechnical, inspection, and analytics personnel to ensure track solutions reflect field realities, constructability, and integrated asset performance. Competencies: • Track systems engineering and rehabilitation, • Rail asset diagnostics and root-cause analysis, • Special trackwork and contact rail familiarity, • Field-to-design translation, • Maintenance optimization and lifecycle thinking, • Technical writing and specification development, • Construction support and submittal review, • Data-informed engineering judgment Required Qualifications: • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline., • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Maryland., • Minimum ten (10)+ years of track engineering experience on railroad and/or rail transit projects., • Demonstrated expertise in track inspection, assessment, rehabilitation design, and technical problem-solving for rail infrastructure. Preferred Qualifications: • Experience across heavy rail, light rail, commuter rail, and/or freight environments., • Experience with rail corrugation analysis, dynamic track behavior, instrumentation, or specialized field testing., • Familiarity with stray current mitigation, ride-quality improvement strategies, and asset lifecycle planning., • Experience supporting standards development and construction-phase engineering services. Additional Eligibility Qualifications: • Authorized to work in the United States with the ability to satisfy MTA project access and security badging requirements., • Ability to support field inspections, track access, and work in active or restricted rail environments as needed., • Ability to work effectively across engineering, maintenance, inspection, and construction stakeholders.
