Job Description Job Title: Marine Electrician Job Description This role supports U.S. naval ships by installing, repairing, and testing electrical systems and C5ISR-related cabling and equipment aboard vessels. You will perform hands-on marine electrical work, including troubleshooting, testing, and installation activities on ships, boats, and related marine equipment, while following strict safety and quality standards. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with weekday day-shift hours and the potential to support a large volume of ongoing projects. Responsibilities • Perform electrical work on ships, boats, and marine equipment in support of naval and military C5ISR system installations., • Troubleshoot electrical issues and correct malfunctions in shipboard systems, including power distribution and navigation-related circuits., • Conduct various electrical tests or experiments, making minor modifications to test setups or procedures as needed and using judgment in measurements., • Select, set up, and operate standard electrical and electronic test equipment, and accurately record test data., • Repair electrical wiring and restore electrical connections required to power ship engines, navigation systems, and related systems., • Secure work areas aboard vessels to prevent electrical hazards and ensure safe working conditions., • Maintain specified engineering records such as test results, drawings, and related technical documentation., • Perform computations by substituting values into specified formulas, plotting data, and drawing simple curves and graphs to document test outcomes., • Carry out routine tasks or tests such as tensile and hardness tests, and operate and adjust simple test equipment while recording test data., • Install and terminate cabling, including fiber optic, RJ-45, DB-type, and multipin connectors, as required by project specifications., • Read and interpret electrical drawings at both apprentice and tradesperson levels to support layout, installation, and troubleshooting., • Lay out and cut electrical enclosures, perform electrical hook-ups, and use multiple meters to verify system performance., • Lay out cable runs under false decking, including working in kneeling positions to route and secure cables., • Band and pack MCTs and RISE systems, and support prelim QA testing, MCTs, and space closeouts., • Implement safety programs and follow SRAR and other safety requirements, actively participating in safety surveillances and walk-throughs., • Provide guidance and instruction (QCI) to lower-level technicians to ensure work quality and adherence to standards., • Perform preliminary QA testing, including ground checks and RSPT testing, to verify electrical system integrity., • Lay out and mount small equipment as needed according to drawings and installation standards., • Use basic hand and power tools, follow QA documentation, and apply meter readings accurately in daily tasks., • Work in accordance with NAVSEA standards, concepts, practices, and procedures related to electrical repair, fabrication, and installation., • Travel as needed to the shipyard location in Newport News, VA to support project assignments., • Experience in electrical work in a related field, including shipboard electrical experience., • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings at tradesperson level for installation and troubleshooting., • Ability to read drawings at apprentice level for basic layout and installation tasks., • Competence with multipin connectors and related marine electrical terminations., • Experience attaching fiber optic, RJ-45, and DB-type connectors., • Knowledge of electrical testing requirements, including ground checks and RSPT testing., • Ability to perform layout and cutting of electrical enclosures and complete electrical hook-ups., • Knowledge and use of multiple types of electrical meters for testing and verification., • Familiarity with banding and packing MCTs and RISE systems., • Ability to perform prelim QA testing, support MCTs, and complete space closeouts., • Capability to lay out and mount small electrical and electronic equipment as needed., • Basic knowledge of tools, QA documents, and meter usage in a marine electrical environment., • Active participation in safety surveillances and walk-throughs and strong attention to safety., • Familiarity with NAVSEA standards, concepts, practices, and procedures for electrical repair, fabrication, and installation., • Ability to work in high heat spaces and climb shipyard dry dock stairs and ladders safely., • Ability to work in kneeling positions for extended periods to lay out cable runs under false decking., • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to carry, push, and/or pull up to 40 pounds for the majority of the shift., • Ability to remain in standing, crouching, or walking positions for most of the workday., • Strong focus on safety and adherence to safety programs and requirements., • Willingness and ability to travel to Newport News, VA for project work., • Ability to obtain an OSHA 10 certification., • Previous experience as an electrician’s mate or in marine electrical installation roles., • Multipin connector certification or demonstrated multipin competency is a strong plus., • Experience providing QCI instruction and mentorship to lower-level technicians., • Experience implementing safety programs, including SRAR qualifications and compliance., • Familiarity with prelim QA testing processes, including MCTs and space closeouts., • Existing OSHA certification beyond OSHA 10 is highly desirable., • Fiber optic certification is a strong plus., • An active DoD Secret clearance is highly desirable., • Experience working on C5ISR system installations or similar defense-related projects. You will contribute directly to critical naval and defense missions while working with a team that values safety, quality, and technical excellence. You work a consistent weekday schedule with no weekend shifts, supporting work-life balance while gaining hands-on experience in a high-impact shipyard environment. Work Environment You will work on-site at a major shipyard facility supporting naval vessels, including work aboard ships, in dry docks, and in high-heat and confined spaces. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with no weekend work, emphasizing reliable attendance and punctuality. The environment involves frequent climbing of shipyard dry dock stairs and ladders, working in kneeling positions under false decking, and handling physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 40 pounds for most of the shift. You will regularly stand, crouch, and walk while using standard electrical tools, test equipment, and meters. Work follows NAVSEA standards and structured safety and QA programs, including active participation in safety surveillances and walk-throughs. Travel to Newport News, VA is required to support shipyard operations and project needs. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chesapeake, VA.
