Job Description Position: Certified Journeyman HVAC / Sheet Metal Technician Job Type: Full-Time Work Type: Commercial HVAC / Tenant Improvement / Renovation Location: Los Angeles & Ventura County Area Job Description Pico Construction is hiring an experienced Certified Journeyman HVAC / Sheet Metal Technician for commercial construction, tenant improvement, and renovation projects. We are looking for a highly skilled journeyman with strong experience in commercial HVAC systems, sheet metal fabrication, ductwork installation, air handlers, rooftop equipment, refrigerant piping, and major HVAC modifications. Strong sheet metal and commercial ductwork experience is required. The candidate must be able to lay out, fabricate, modify, assemble, and install sheet metal duct systems based on mechanical drawings and field conditions. The ideal candidate should be able to review the mechanical plans, plan the work, perform layout, fabricate and install ductwork, set equipment, and complete HVAC installation with minimal supervision. Responsibilities • Read and understand mechanical plans, duct layouts, equipment schedules, details, and specifications., • Perform commercial sheet metal layout, fabrication, modification, and installation., • Fabricate and install rectangular and round ductwork., • Fabricate and install:, • Elbows, • Transitions, • Offsets, • Reducers, • Plenums, • Takeoffs, • Equipment connections, • Branch ducts, • Flexible connections, • Field-measure and fabricate duct fittings as required., • Cut, assemble, seal, and install sheet metal duct systems., • Modify existing commercial ductwork to accommodate new layouts and equipment., • Install supply, return, outside-air, exhaust, and ventilation duct systems., • Install duct hangers, trapezes, supports, and required bracing., • Install fire/smoke dampers, volume dampers, balancing dampers, and related accessories where required., • Install diffusers, grilles, registers, and air distribution devices., • Install and replace air handling units (AHUs)., • Install rooftop units (RTUs), fan coil units, split systems, heat pumps, and other commercial HVAC equipment., • Assist with rigging, setting, and positioning heavy HVAC equipment., • Fabricate and install sheet metal transitions and adapters between equipment and duct systems., • Install vibration isolators, equipment curbs, supports, and flexible connections., • Install and modify refrigerant piping., • Perform brazing using nitrogen purge., • Perform pressure testing, evacuation, charging, and startup procedures., • Install condensate piping and related drain systems., • Coordinate equipment power and controls requirements with electricians and controls contractors., • Assist with thermostat, sensor, control, and BAS coordination where applicable., • Perform equipment startup, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning support., • Perform demolition and removal of existing HVAC equipment and ductwork., • Coordinate HVAC and duct installations with framing, electrical, plumbing, sprinkler, and other trades., • Identify field conflicts before fabrication or installation., • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas. Requirements • Certified Journeyman-level HVAC / Sheet Metal Technician., • Strong commercial construction HVAC experience., • Strong commercial sheet metal and ductwork fabrication experience required., • Must be able to independently lay out, fabricate, modify, and install commercial duct systems., • Experience with rectangular and round sheet metal ductwork., • Experience fabricating transitions, offsets, elbows, plenums, takeoffs, and equipment connections., • Strong understanding of duct supports, hangers, sealing, and installation methods., • Experience working with air handling units and larger commercial HVAC equipment., • Experience with RTUs, fan coils, split systems, and heat pumps., • Strong refrigerant piping and brazing skills., • Experience with nitrogen purging, pressure testing, evacuation, charging, and startup., • Ability to read and work directly from mechanical plans, duct layouts, equipment schedules, details, and specifications., • Understanding of commercial HVAC controls and electrical coordination., • Familiarity with rigging and installation of heavy HVAC equipment., • Ability to solve field layout and installation problems independently., • Must have own basic HVAC and sheet metal hand tools., • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation., • Able to safely work from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and rooftops., • EPA 608 Universal Certification required., • OSHA/safety training preferred. The right candidate should be able to walk onto a commercial project, review the mechanical drawings, lay out the duct system, take field measurements, fabricate required sheet metal fittings, install ductwork and equipment, and coordinate the complete HVAC installation with other trades. Commercial sheet metal fabrication and duct installation experience is one of the most important qualifications for this position.
