Job DescriptionJob Title: Maintenance Mechanic Job Description The Maintenance Mechanic ensures that all plant equipment, including trailers, heavy equipment, and hydraulic systems, operates safely, reliably, and efficiently. This role follows preventative maintenance schedules, troubleshoots equipment issues, maintains accurate records, and supports production by minimizing downtime while adhering to all applicable safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities • Ensure all equipment operates safely and correctly, including maintenance and repair of trailers, heavy equipment, and hydraulic systems., • Follow preventative maintenance schedules and complete all scheduled maintenance tasks on time., • Maintain detailed equipment records, including maintenance history and costs associated with each piece of equipment., • Communicate proactively with the team about parts inventory to minimize equipment downtime., • Ensure all trailer inspections and repairs comply with applicable regulations., • Follow all OSHA and ANSI regulations and safety procedures at all times., • Sample boiler water regularly to ensure it operates within the recommended range and address issues as needed., • Lock and tag out any unsafe equipment and keep it out of service until repairs are completed and verified., • Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory log of parts to avoid overstock and shortages., • Obtain approval for all capital expenditures related to plant projects to maintain an accurate budget., • Collaborate closely with operators, bed foremen, and production personnel to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment issues, supporting a smoother concrete pouring process., • Maintain professional relationships and good public relations with vendors, outside contractors, and other companies., • Work both indoors and outdoors year-round, supporting production needs, including occasional long shifts and weekend work during peak periods.Essential Skills, • 3+ years of experience as an equipment mechanic or diesel maintenance mechanic., • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience working on a variety of motors and equipment, including construction or farm equipment., • Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with production teams, vendors, and other stakeholders., • Ability to organize and manage maintenance tasks, schedules, and records reliably., • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent., • Comfort working with hydraulics and performing preventative maintenance tasks., • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods, lift, push, and pull up to 75 lbs., crawl, climb ladders, and work long hours as needed., • Willingness and ability to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • A 2-year technical or related degree is a plus., • Experience with maintenance in construction, precast, or similar heavy industrial environments is beneficial., • Familiarity with boiler water sampling and basic boiler operation is an advantage., • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance logs, cost tracking, and inventory records., • Comfort working as part of a small maintenance team supporting multiple plants., • Strong sense of responsibility for safety, including lockout/tagout procedures and adherence to OSHA and ANSI standards., • Reliability, consistent attendance, and a commitment to making sound decisions at work and at home., • Demonstrated work ethic, consistent effort, and care for personal well-being and the organization.Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a contract-to-hire role based in Des Moines, Iowa, supporting a precast plant environment. The maintenance team typically consists of 4–6 people covering two plants, creating a close-knit, collaborative atmosphere. The role involves both indoor and outdoor work and is subject to all weather conditions year-round, including extreme cold and heat, as this is not a seasonal operation and work continues in various conditions. The standard shift runs Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with optional overtime available from 4:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. During busy periods, there may be 12–14 hour days and occasional work every other Saturday in the summer. The environment is industrial and production-focused, with heavy equipment, trailers, hydraulics, and boilers in use, and requires adherence to strict safety practices and regulatory standards. The dress environment is practical and safety-oriented, with appropriate workwear and personal protective equipment expected to match an active, hands-on maintenance role in a precast plant. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $32.00/hr.
