Job Description Job Title: Machine Operator Job Description This role operates a variety of metal fabrication machines to cut, bend, drill, and form steel components used in catwalks, stairs, and other agricultural structures. You will work with lasers, CNC mills and lathes, angle-masters, press brakes, and related equipment to produce parts that meet precise production specifications. The position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to work autonomously on multiple machines, and effective communication with technical and production teams. Responsibilities • Operate multiple machines such as lasers, CNC mills and lathes, angle-masters, press brakes, CNC saws, and other metal fabrication equipment to cut, fold, bend, drill, and mold steel components., • Work in a fully autonomous manner on at least three different machines within the plant, managing setups, adjustments, and production runs with minimal supervision., • Measure, inspect, and verify all parts against production prints, ensuring dimensions and features match specifications, and sign off on completed parts to confirm accuracy and quality., • Read and interpret blueprints and production drawings to determine machine settings, tooling requirements, and process steps., • Communicate clearly with detailing staff, industrial engineering technicians, and other team members to clarify prints, resolve programming questions, and address tooling or equipment issues., • Identify and communicate opportunities for process improvements, equipment enhancements, and workflow optimization., • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, jib cranes, and other material handling equipment to move, load, and unload raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods safely and efficiently., • Handle sheet metal and structural steel materials, organizing and staging them for production according to job requirements., • Support or perform basic off-line programming tasks for machines when needed, collaborating with technical staff to ensure accurate programs, even though this is not a core requirement., • Train other team members on machine controls, operating procedures, safety practices, and overall machine use to support cross-training and team development., • Follow all safety procedures and plant guidelines while working around heavy equipment, moving machinery, and material handling devices., • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including machines, tools, and material storage locations, to support efficient and safe operations., • Monitor machine performance, detect issues such as incorrect cuts or equipment malfunctions, and take appropriate action to correct problems or escalate them to the appropriate personnel., • Contribute to production goals by managing cycle times, minimizing rework, and supporting continuous improvement efforts across the shop. Essential Skills • Proven experience operating machines in a steel manufacturing environment, including exposure to metal fabrication processes., • Ability to operate lasers, CNC mills and lathes, press brakes, CNC saws, and related fabrication equipment or strong experience with similar machinery., • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and manage at least three different machines within a production environment., • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and production prints to guide machine setup and part production., • Strong measurement skills, including the ability to accurately read and use a tape measure for dimensional checks., • Experience with sheet metal and steel fabrication processes, including cutting, bending, drilling, and forming., • Competence in operating forklifts, overhead cranes, jib cranes, and other material handling equipment, or the ability to learn these skills quickly., • High school diploma or GED., • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with technical, engineering, and production team members regarding prints, programming, tooling, and equipment issues., • Attention to detail and commitment to verifying part accuracy and quality before sign-off., • Willingness and ability to work a standard 50-hour work week, including additional hours as needed. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience with off-line programming for CNC or laser equipment is highly desirable, although not required., • Experience in production environments involving catwalks, stairs, or agricultural structures is beneficial., • Familiarity with angle-masters, laser operation, press-brake setup, and sheet metal handling is an advantage., • Comfort working with multiple machines and shifting between tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing setting., • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify process or equipment issues and suggest improvements., • Capability and interest in training others on machine controls, processes, and best practices., • Reliability and strong work ethic, with a focus on safety, quality, and teamwork. Work Environment This role is on a first shift schedule, typically working from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with additional hours on Fridays to reach at least a 50-hour work week. You work in a steel manufacturing plant that uses equipment such as lasers, CNC mills and lathes, press brakes, CNC saws, overhead cranes, jib cranes, and forklifts. The environment involves handling sheet metal and steel, operating heavy machinery, and moving raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods. Seasonal temperatures in the plant vary; summers can be hot and humid inside the building, and winters can be cold, especially when working near open overhead doors. You should be comfortable working in these conditions and wearing appropriate work attire suitable for a steel manufacturing and fabrication setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $23.00/hr.
