Job Description The SVP, Head of Distribution and Business Development, is a senior executive responsible for driving overall distribution strategy, profitable growth and disciplined execution. This role oversees all sales channels and agency relationships to expand market presence and deliver sustained business results. The SVP establishes a strategic vision that aligns underwriting, product, marketing, and operations with distribution objectives, and leads a high-performing team to translate strategy into consistent execution. Acting as both a market ambassador and an internal change agent, this leader ensures the organization’s distribution capabilities remain innovative, competitive, and closely attuned to partner and customer needs. Accountable for both strategy and execution, this role transforms growth initiatives into disciplined actions driving measurable outcomes and sustained operational performance. Accountabilities: Distribution Strategy & Market Development • Develop and execute a comprehensive multi-channel distribution strategy (agents, brokers, strategic partners) aligned with corporate, product-line, and member goals to achieve profitable growth and competitiveness., • Lead segmentation and establish consistent rules of engagement (e.g., broker-of-record, selective access models) to strengthen underwriting effectiveness., • Cultivate and expand agency and broker relationships — building loyalty with top agencies, MGAs, and national networks, onboarding new partners, and pursuing alliances to access untapped markets., • Design and manage competitive compensation programs that reinforce desired behaviors and reward profitable placements., • Serve as a visible market ambassador through conferences, client meetings, and industry forums to advance The Mutual Group’s presence., • Oversee the full lifecycle of agency partnerships, including onboarding, performance management, development, remediation, and M&A activity to ensure continuity and long-term book performance., • Ensure compliance with regulations, ethics, and conduct standards while promoting producer certification and showcasing Claims, Underwriting, and Risk Management capabilities to support program growth. Business Performance & Growth Execution • Use data-driven insights to guide forecasting, market expansion, and competitive positioning., • Set ambitious production targets and oversee sales program execution, ensuring pipeline strength., • Track industry, competitor, and regulatory shifts to inform agile and innovative distribution initiatives., • Partner with Underwriting to align production growth with disciplined risk selection. Enterprise Collaboration & Innovation • Collaborate with product, underwriting, marketing, and operations leadership to align distribution strategies with offerings and service capabilities., • Partner with business segment leaders on planning, resource allocation, and capability development., • Leverage technology, AI, and digital platforms to enhance speed, efficiency, and customer/partner experience., • Act as the internal voice of distribution, bringing market and partner insights into strategic planning. Leadership & Organizational Development • Lead and mentor a high-performing distribution and BD team, fostering an inclusive, accountable, and performance-driven culture., • Provide coaching, succession planning, and staff development to build organizational capability., • Drive execution discipline through activity tracking, performance management, and goal alignment., • Encourage collaboration and knowledge-sharing across teams to unlock competitive advantage., • All other duties as assigned. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Finance, or related field; MBA preferred., • 20+ years of progressive leadership in P&C distribution, sales, or business development with Independent Agents., • Strong record of P&L ownership, profitable revenue growth, and developing agency partnerships that deliver exceptional customer experience., • Demonstrated success driving regional/national growth strategies and modernizing sales operations., • Proven ability to lead high-performing teams, fostering accountability, engagement, and an inclusive culture., • Excellent executive-level communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills with both external partners and internal stakeholders., • Deep understanding of P&C insurance products, underwriting fundamentals, and distribution economics (agency compensation, incentives)., • Familiarity with CRM, sales technologies, and independent agency management or digital quoting platforms., • Industry certifications (e.g., CPCU, Risk Management, Customer Experience) preferred., • Experience with independent agency management systems or digital quote platforms preferred., • Regular travel required.
