Job Description Job Title: Certified Welding Inspector / Structural Steel Inspector Job Description This role focuses on inspecting and testing structural steel during erection on general commercial building sites. You will work collaboratively with contractors, technicians, and project managers to ensure that structural steel construction complies with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications. The position requires a thorough understanding of building construction practices and the ability to clearly document observations and test results in accordance with accepted engineering practices. Responsibilities • Inspect and test structural steel during erection on commercial building sites to verify compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications., • Perform observations, inspections, and tests of building construction projects, including welding and structural steel components., • Conduct non-destructive testing (NDT) using PT, MT, and UT methods in accordance with Level II certification requirements., • Review and interpret engineering and construction plans, specifications, and blueprints to plan and execute inspection activities., • Document inspection findings, test results, and observations in clear, detailed reports that follow accepted engineering practices., • Communicate daily with site contractors, other technicians, and project managers to discuss inspection results, issues, and recommended actions., • Verify that welding and bolting operations comply with AWS, AISC, and ICC requirements, including high-strength bolting., • Travel to construction sites using a reliable vehicle suitable for site conditions and adhere to site-specific safety requirements., • Work nights and weekends as required to support project schedules and critical construction activities., • Lift and move equipment, tools, and materials weighing up to 60–80 pounds as needed to perform inspections and tests on site. Essential Skills • At least 5 years of experience with construction and structural steel erection., • Certified Welding Inspector (AWS CWI) certification., • ICC High Strength Bolting certification., • Certification as Level II in PT (penetrant testing), MT (magnetic particle testing), and UT (ultrasonic testing) methods., • Strong understanding of building construction practices and structural steel erection., • Ability to interpret engineering and construction plans, specifications, and blueprints., • Knowledge of AWS and AISC specifications., • Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record., • Ability to meet pre-employment requirements., • Access to a reliable vehicle suitable for use on construction sites., • Ability to work nights and weekends as required by project needs., • Ability to lift and move 60–80 pounds safely., • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective daily interaction with contractors, technicians, and project managers. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Knowledge of other trades such as soils, aggregates, concrete, fireproofing, and EIFS is a plus., • Knowledge of ANSI B31.1 and B31.9 piping codes is desirable., • Familiarity with AWS D1.5 is desirable., • Experience performing welding inspection, including reviewing welds and verifying compliance with applicable codes., • Ability to use and maintain NDT equipment for PT, MT, and UT inspections., • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, thorough inspection documentation., • Capability to work independently on job sites while maintaining a high level of professionalism and safety awareness.
