POSITION SUMMARY: Are you ready to accelerate your HR career by gaining hands-on, full-suite People & Culture experience? The Director of People & Culture supports every major HR function across the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, including Y University recruitment and onboarding, development, performance management, benefits, HRIS, analytics, and employee experience. This Director is a central hub for People & Culture operations, coordinating core HR processes across the full employee lifecycle. In partnership with the broader People & Culture team, this role helps keep people operations organized, responsive, and employee-focused, ensuring operational excellence, data integrity, timely resolution of HR requests, and smooth execution of the employee lifecycle. Reporting to the Senior Director of Benefits & HRIS, this role also provides seasonal leadership and oversight to our People & Culture seasonal interns, enabling the Director to gain meaningful supervisory experience while contributing to a mission-driven team strengthening communities every day. DIVISION OF DUTIES: • 35% - People & Culture Intake & HRIS, • 25% - Recruiting & Onboarding Support, • 20% - Performance Management & Development, • 10% - Engagement, Communication, Special Projects, • 10% - HR Analytics, Metrics & Insights ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIORITIES: People & Culture Intake & HRIS • Serves as the primary intake point for People & Culture through the HR inbox and HRIS Community Group, ensuring timely, accurate, and welcoming support for team members and leaders., • Triages, categorizes, and routes inquiries to the appropriate HR business partners or subject matter experts; drafts template responses for common questions., • Processes employment changes, maintains personnel files, uploads documentation, and ensures accuracy and data integrity within HRIS platforms., • Supports vendor billing workflows, including invoice processing, reconciliation, and maintaining logs for services such as background checks and recruiting platforms., • Assists with compliance audits (I-9, background checks, certifications) and maintains required documentation. Recruiting & Onboarding Support (Y University) • Conducts ongoing audits of job descriptions and collaborates with hiring managers to ensure accurate, up-to-date postings., • Supports center-level recruiting needs., • Prepares materials, supplies, and room setup for Y University; attends Monday YU sessions to support facilitation., • Ensures new hire onboarding tasks and compliance requirements are completed; escalates outstanding items to managers. Performance Management & Development • Supports the full performance management cycle, including reporting, tracking completion, documentation management, and cycle closeout., • Coordinates communication, reminders, and resource distribution to ensure consistent manager participation., • Assists with development and learning initiatives by preparing materials, coordinating logistics, and supporting delivery. HR Analytics, Metrics & Insights • Creates and generates recurring People & Culture dashboard metrics, including turnover, promotions, hires, onboarding compliance, and exit survey insights., • Audits and manages HRIS system and HR dashboard through data tracking, analysis, and trend identification., • Monitors workflow patterns and employee relations trends to identify opportunities for process or service improvements. Engagement, Communication, Special Projects • Assists with People & Culture communications, engagement initiatives, and pulse survey processes., • Supports recognition, culture-building effort, and internal communications., • Contributes to policy implementation, process improvements, and department-wide special projects. YMCA CAUSE DRIVEN LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES: • Collaboration, • Functional Expertise, • Developing Self & Others Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or HR Certification AND 1–3 years of experience in human resources or related field; A blend of education/certification and commensurate experience will be considered. Knowledge in recruitment, onboarding, HR operations, or employee lifecycle management preferred. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency with HRIS platforms (Paylocity and/or Dayforce preferred), Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and support DEI initiatives. PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES: Proactive self-starter with strong initiative.
