Job Description LOCATION: Chicago, IL 60634 FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Housekeeping The facility serves Illinois residents by providing access to comprehensive human services that promote safety, wellness, self-sufficiency, and independence for individuals, families, and serving communities statewide. POSITION SUMMARY Under general supervision, the Support Services Worker - Housekeeping performs a variety of cleaning, sanitation, and housekeeping duties to maintain safe, clean, and sanitary conditions in the facilities including residential treatment centers, developmental centers, mental health facilities, administrative offices, and public service areas. This position is essential to ensuring a healthy, safe environment for clients, residents, patients, staff, and visitors while maintaining compliance with state and federal health, safety, and infection control standards. The incumbent works independently and as part of a team to perform routine and specialized cleaning tasks, handles hazardous materials according to safety protocols, and contributes to the overall quality of care provided by maintaining facility cleanliness and environmental safety standards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Daily Housekeeping Operations (60%) Performs daily cleaning and sanitation of assigned areas including client/patient rooms, bathrooms, common areas, offices, hallways, stairwells, dining areas, activity rooms, and public spaces Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and buffs floors using manual and powered equipment Dusts furniture, fixtures, windowsills, ledges, and other surfaces Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms including toilets, sinks, mirrors, fixtures, and tile surfaces Empties waste receptacles and removes trash to designated collection areas; replaces liners Cleans and maintains kitchen areas, break rooms, and food service spaces (excluding food preparation) Washes walls, windows, doors, and other vertical surfaces as assigned Removes debris, litter, and recyclable materials from assigned areas Restocks supplies including paper products, soap, and sanitizing materials in restrooms and common areas Reports maintenance needs, safety hazards, and facility concerns to supervisor Maintains cleanliness of housekeeping equipment and storage areas Infection Control and Safety Compliance (20%) Follows established infection control procedures and protocols, especially in healthcare and residential settings Uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, masks, and eye protection Properly handles, mixes, and applies cleaning chemicals and disinfectants according to manufacturer specifications and safety data sheets (SDS) Implements and maintains isolation and contamination control procedures as directed Cleans and disinfects high-touch surfaces frequently to prevent disease transmission Disposes of biohazard materials, sharps, and regulated medical waste according to OSHA and IDPH standards Reports potential exposure incidents or safety violations immediately Participates in infection control training and implements learned protocols Maintains compliance with JCAHO, CMS, IDPH, and other regulatory standards Specialized Cleaning and Deep Cleaning (15%) Performs deep cleaning tasks including carpet shampooing, floor stripping and waxing, and high-dusting Cleans and sanitizes patient care equipment and furniture as assigned Performs terminal cleaning of rooms following patient/client discharge Responds to emergency cleaning situations including spills, bodily fluids, and biohazard incidents Performs seasonal cleaning tasks and special projects as assigned Assists with cleaning after facility events, meetings, or activities Prepares rooms for new admissions, transfers, or special purposes Teamwork and Collaboration (5%) Works cooperatively with Environmental Services team members to complete assignments Coordinates with nursing staff, direct care staff, and other departments regarding cleaning priorities Communicates professionally with clients, residents, patients, visitors, and staff Provides assistance and coverage for other housekeeping staff as needed Participates in staff meetings and training sessions Supports the mission and values of IDHS in all interactions MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: REQUIRES: High school diploma or GED equivalent; OR Equivalency: One year of experience in custodial, housekeeping, or facilities maintenance work may substitute for the educational requirement Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, materials, and equipment Knowledge of safety practices related to cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials Ability to follow written and oral instructions Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect client/patient privacy Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations Ability to read and understand safety labels, SDS sheets, and written procedures Basic math skills for measuring and mixing cleaning solutions Physical ability to perform manual labor and operate cleaning equipment Ability to adhere to attendance and punctuality requirements Ability to work flexible schedules including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Previous housekeeping or custodial experience in healthcare, institutional, or residential care settings Experience working with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or other special populations Certification in infection control, bloodborne pathogens, or hazardous materials handling Bilingual skills (Spanish, Polish, Arabic, Mandarin, or other languages) Experience with powered floor care equipment (buffers, scrubbers, extractors) Knowledge of OSHA regulations and environmental safety standards CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Pre-Employment Requirements: Successfully complete criminal background check through Illinois State Police and FBI Pass pre-employment physical examination and health screening Complete tuberculosis (TB) screening and maintain annual compliance Provide proof of required immunizations (Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, Influenza) Complete new employee orientation and mandatory training programs Sign confidentiality agreements and HIPAA compliance acknowledgments Ongoing Requirements: Complete annual mandatory training including: • Infection Control and Bloodborne Pathogens, • OSHA Hazard Communication, • Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures, • Client Rights and Confidentiality, • Workplace Violence Prevention, • Cultural Competency and Diversity Training, • Sexual Harassment Prevention Maintain current knowledge of cleaning procedures and safety protocols Participate in performance evaluations and professional development activities Comply with all facility policies, procedures, and Code of Conduct Work Schedule: Full-time position: 37.5 hours per week May include rotating shifts, weekends, evenings, and holidays On-call availability may be required for emergency situations Schedule subject to facility operational needs PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Physical Requirements: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours per shift) Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach overhead repeatedly Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds regularly Ability to push and pull loaded carts and equipment weighing a minimum of 50 pounds.
