This position will operate within the Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) program within the Greater Los Angeles, CA (GLA) VA Health Care System. To serve as Supervisory Motor Vehicle Operator, providing transportation to veterans and their spouses who live in suburban areas of the GLA VA Health Care System and surrounding satellite clinics catchment areas. Driver is required to maintain a current California Department of Transportation CDL License (License in resume or attached). Major duties include, but not limited to: • As the Motor Vehicle Operator Supervisor to the Transportation Section, the incumbent(s) establishes internal procedures and maintains and plan the work assignments and practices of the section with the guidelines of policy, regulations, and sound motor vehicle operations practice for accomplishing the duties of the position., • Reviews work in progress to assess the quality and quantity of work produced., • Shall determine which employees will be assigned to various tasks, including the training of new employees., • Keeps employees informed relative to current policies, practices, and procedures, along with management intent., • Plan, schedule and assign tasks to ensure consistent coverage of all administrative duties., • Approves/disapproves sick and annual leave, consistent with current practice and policies., • Provides on the job training for employees and provides back up skills by cross training., • Recommends promotions, reassignments, awards, or other status changes of assigned personnel., • Performs the driving duties and related services operating various types of and classes of motor vehicles including buses, trucks, vans, patient transport vehicles such as ambulances and wheelchair buses, passenger, and shuttle vans., • Provides nonemergent, safe, reliable transportation of eligible veterans and cargo., • Operates and provides preventive maintenance checks and services for patient transport vehicles., • Interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day., • Provides metrics to the VTS Mobility Manager of veterans who arrived at the GLA VA Health Care system via the VTS transportation vehicles., • Responsible to ensure only eligible veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center or satellite clinic and returned to their respective pick-up locations. The Motor Vehicle Operator must be in good physical condition when performing driving and related services, particularly, when driving for extended periods of time and distance. The Motor vehicle Operator must be vigilant and alert to cope with adverse traffic and weather conditions. Requires drivers to exert physical, operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads or LARGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE/PATIENTS. Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects in excess of 50 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires, make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways and first echelon maintenances. Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending, and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance. This job does not have an education qualification requirement.
