Job Description Job Title: Maintenance Technician – 2nd Shift Job Description This 2nd Shift Maintenance Technician role focuses on diagnosing, repairing, and optimizing facility equipment and infrastructure within a fast-paced food manufacturing plant in Grand Rapids, Michigan. You will perform mechanical and electrical maintenance, support sanitation tear downs and rebuilds, and ensure equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with safety and food safety standards. The position offers a flexible start time in the early afternoon, minimal weekend work, and opportunities for overtime on projects for self-motivated technicians. Responsibilities • Diagnose, repair, and optimize facility equipment and infrastructure in a food manufacturing plant to support continuous, efficient production., • Perform tear downs and rebuilds of all manufacturing equipment, ensuring all components are disassembled and reassembled to specification., • Use hand and power tools to disassemble food manufacturing equipment for the sanitation team and rebuild equipment after cleaning., • Conduct first-level quality checks and preventative maintenance audits on HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems., • Complete, update, and document work orders accurately using the Redzone Reliability Module., • Perform mechanical work on pumps, positive displacement equipment, conveyors, and related mechanical systems, including set ups and tear downs., • Carry out electrical tasks such as wiring and basic troubleshooting; PLC programming is not required, but the ability to follow electrical schematics is expected., • Apply welding and fabrication skills to repair or modify equipment as needed., • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain variable frequency drives (VFDs) and related motor control systems., • Read and interpret blueprints and mechanical or electrical schematics to guide repairs, installations, and adjustments., • Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), safety procedures, and food safety requirements at all times., • Collaborate with production and sanitation teams to schedule maintenance activities and minimize downtime., • Identify opportunities for process and equipment improvements and proactively support continuous improvement initiatives., • Support occasional weekend work and overtime for special projects or urgent maintenance needs. Essential Skills • Proven mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience working on motors, pumps, gears, and pneumatic systems., • Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs), including understanding how they control motor speed and ramp-up/ramp-down., • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical and electrical schematics., • Mechanical assembly skills, including set up and tear down of equipment in a manufacturing environment., • Experience in equipment maintenance within an industrial or manufacturing setting., • Working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and their application in a food or similar production environment., • Ability to perform basic electrical work such as wiring and troubleshooting without requiring PLC programming expertise., • Strong troubleshooting skills for both mechanical and electrical systems., • Competence using hand and power tools safely and effectively., • Capability to perform welding and fabrication tasks related to equipment maintenance., • Comfort working in colder environments typical of a food production facility., • Strong attention to detail and ability to document work accurately in maintenance systems such as the Redzone Reliability Module. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working in a food manufacturing or processing facility., • Familiarity with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical system audits and preventative maintenance., • Experience in PLC troubleshooting, even if not required for programming duties., • Exposure to positive displacement pumps and conveyor systems in industrial settings., • Prior experience on 2nd shift or in a fast-paced production environment., • Demonstrated ability to act as a self-starter and take initiative on maintenance projects., • Strong communication skills for coordinating with production, sanitation, and operations teams. Work Environment This is a 2nd shift position, Monday through Friday, typically working 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday work as needed. Shifts are 8 hours, and overtime is available for project work, particularly for self-starters who enjoy taking on additional responsibilities. The facility operates in an older building that has been well maintained; it is very clean, with new, organized equipment and a strong emphasis on cleanliness and order. Because this is a food manufacturing environment, temperatures throughout the building are on the colder side, and employees should be comfortable working in cooler conditions. The plant uses modern maintenance tools and systems, including the Redzone Reliability Module, and supports a structured yet flexible environment where safety, food safety, and organization are prioritized. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $36.00/hr.
