Job DescriptionJob Title: Medical AssistantJob Description This Medical Assistant role supports a busy multispecialty orthopedics and pain management practice by performing a wide range of clinical and administrative duties. You will work closely with a spine surgeon and other providers in the exam room, help manage patient flow through the clinic, and ensure accurate documentation and coordination of care. Daily responsibilities include obtaining medical histories and vital signs, preparing patients and exam rooms, assisting with minor procedures, processing laboratory samples, scheduling appointments, and managing insurance authorizations. This position requires a certified Medical Assistant with strong back-office experience in orthopedics or urgent care, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment. Responsibilities • Obtain and document patients’ medical and medication histories accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR)., • Measure and record patients’ vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and other key indicators., • Prepare patients for examination or treatment by assisting with gowns, positioning, and explaining procedures., • Assist physicians and physician assistants during examinations and treatments, including minor procedures., • Administer injections safely and accurately, including properly withdrawing and preparing medications for administration., • Use medical equipment for spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal pump programmers as directed by the provider., • Support a comprehensive plan of care as part of a multidisciplinary team focused on pain management and orthopedics., • Apply basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology as it relates to pain management in daily clinical tasks., • Perform administrative duties such as typing, scheduling appointments, and maintaining accurate and up-to-date medical records., • Handle front desk check-in duties, including greeting patients, verifying information, and coordinating patient flow., • Schedule procedures and office visits and follow established scheduling procedures to optimize clinic efficiency., • Obtain insurance authorizations for upcoming cases and procedures, ensuring all required documentation is complete., • Communicate effectively with hospitals, surgery centers, pharmacies, laboratories, and other external partners., • Manage heavy phone volume, including answering patient inquiries, relaying messages to providers, and providing follow-up information., • Apply familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT coding to support accurate documentation and billing processes., • Work with Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) requirements to support quality, efficiency, and performance measures., • Use eClinicalWorks (ECW) and other EMR systems to enter, update, and retrieve patient information., • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times in accordance with HIPAA and medical office policies., • Fill prescription requests accurately and in accordance with provider orders and clinic protocols., • Maintain clean and organized exam rooms and clinical areas, including cleaning equipment and surfaces between patients., • Restock exam rooms and supply areas, monitor inventory, and report or request needed supplies., • Demonstrate punctual and consistent attendance to support reliable clinic operations., • Manage time effectively to balance clinical tasks, administrative work, and patient communication., • Use critical thinking skills to recognize issues, prioritize tasks, and make appropriate decisions within scope of practice., • Collaborate with providers, nurses, and other team members to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care., • Communicate clearly and professionally with patients of all ages and diverse backgrounds, providing a welcoming and supportive experience.Essential Skills, • Current Medical Assistant certification., • At least 3 years of back-office Medical Assistant experience in orthopedics or urgent care., • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or current CPR certification., • Experience working with eClinicalWorks (ECW) electronic medical record system., • Experience with Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) processes and requirements., • Proficiency with ICD-10 and CPT coding for clinical documentation and billing support., • Ability to obtain and document medical and medication histories accurately., • Ability to measure and record vital signs with precision., • Demonstrated skill in administering injections and accurately withdrawing medications., • Ability to use medical equipment related to spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal pump programmers (training may be provided)., • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and basic human anatomy and physiology, particularly in pain management and orthopedics., • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and strong computer skills., • Experience performing both clinical back-office tasks and front desk check-in duties., • Strong phone etiquette and experience handling high call volumes., • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with patients, providers, and external partners., • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced environment., • Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining professionalism and composure., • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and medical office policies., • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds., • Bilingual fluency in Spanish (required for this role)., • Detail-oriented approach with a focus on accuracy and thorough documentation.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience in a multispecialty orthopedics and pain management setting., • Experience in urgent care or internal medicine environments., • Prior exposure to EKG procedures., • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Korean, or another commonly spoken local language (in addition to the required Spanish) are a plus., • Comfort working with patients of all ages and diverse backgrounds., • Ability to fill prescription requests in coordination with providers and pharmacies., • Strong communication skills with patients, providers, pharmacies, and laboratories., • Energetic, professional, and composed demeanor when interacting with patients and colleagues., • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team., • Experience supporting academic or training environments (such as working with medical or PA students) is beneficial., • Familiarity with scheduling procedures and obtaining insurance authorizations for surgeries and procedures., • Experience working in environments that utilize quality and performance programs such as MIPS.Work Environment This role supports a spine surgeon and other providers in a busy multispecialty orthopedics and pain management practice. The clinic operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a typical schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for this position. On Fridays, the physician typically leaves around 1:00 p.m., and the Medical Assistant uses the remaining time to catch up on administrative work, documentation, and follow-up tasks. The practice includes multiple providers and serves as a teaching environment affiliated with various medical and physician assistant programs, creating a dynamic, learning-focused setting. You will work extensively with electronic medical records, particularly eClinicalWorks (ECW), and use standard back-office medical equipment, as well as specialized devices for spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal pump programmers. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Orange, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr.
