About the Job: The Customer Experience department is seeking an Airport Art Program Coordinator II who is highly organized, detail oriented, and a collaborative individual who gets energized by a dynamic operational environment. As part of the Airport Art Program, the selected candidate will play a vital role in transforming the airport experience into something far more than a point of transit, they will help create moments of inspiration, reflection, and connection for millions of travelers each year. From curated exhibitions to live performances and thoughtfully maintained public art, this role shapes how passengers feel as they move through the airport and creates a lasting impression. The Airport Art Program Coordinator II will help bring the airport’s artistic vision to life by preserving and managing a diverse public art collection, coordinating exhibitions engaging performances, and ensuring every installation is safe, accessible, and impactful. You’ll collaborate across departments, support artists and contractors, and help deliver events and programs that elevate the SAN travel experience. What You’ll Do: • Art Collection Care: Provides assistance and hands-on care for the existing airport public art collection under the direction of the Program Manager; liaison to internal departments with regard to conservation; maintains collections management system for airport public art collection; conducts regular inspections of airport campus to assess public art and exhibition conditions; coordinates necessary maintenance as needed. Manages and updates artwork maintenance and conservation records, including maintenance manuals, artist intent documents, and conservation histories., • Program & Exhibitions Coordination: Provides assistance while coordinating the Airport Performing Arts and Temporary Exhibitions Programs under the direction of the Program Manager; coordinates installation and de-installation activities; schedules performing artists and groups; coordinates access, logistics, safety and escorting; schedules and monitors work by art contractors. Coordinates and tracks the procurement and maintenance of the art program’s equipment inventory and storage. Assists with the design, fabrication, or refurbishment of display systems, mounts, signage, and exhibition hardware., • Access & Compliance: As Signatory, coordinates access, logistics, and safety compliance for all art-related programs within airport areas; ensures adherence to all airport operational, safety, and environmental standards and serves as the primary signatory for the Art Team., • Event Planning & Engagement: Assists with the planning, coordination, and implementation of Arts Program projects, events, and public functions—including Airport Arts Advisory Committee meetings, exhibition openings, and guided art tours—while preparing, organizing, and distributing reports, presentations, and departmental records, under the direction of the Manager, Arts Program., • Records Coordination: Serves as the Documents Coordinator for the Arts Program, maintaining accurate and organized documentation and tracking the program’s impact on passengers and the community through survey data, statistics, and qualitative documentation., • Work-Related Driving*: Operate and drive Authority vehicles throughout the campus to transport art and special event equipment. The Skills You Need: • Project coordination: Plans and implements maintenance and installation schedules; coordinates contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure timely completion of work., • Technical Knowledge & Maintenance: Demonstrates skill in art handling, lighting, framing, fabrication, and safe use of tools and equipment. Applies professional standards in handling, maintenance, installation, and conservation of artworks in various media., • Communication & Collaboration: Communicates effectively verbally and in writing with artists, vendors, conservators, airport staff, and related stakeholders; prepares reports, documentation, and maintenance plans., • Critical Evaluation: Assesses artwork condition and environmental factors; documents findings and recommends treatment or preventive measures., • Problem-Solving/Agility: Identifies and uses effective judgement to resolve issues related to artwork condition, placement, or logistics; adapts to evolving situations in a dynamic airport environment., • Attention to Detail: Ensures work is complete and accurate; follows up with others to ensure that agreements and commitments have been fulfilled., • Relationship Management: Builds and maintains relations with stakeholders, identifies and relates information, ideas and problems, and ideas based on collaborative solutions. The Experience You Need to Have**: • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in art, performing arts, art history, arts administration, conservation, museum studies, public administration, or other closely related field;, • Four years of progressively responsible experience involving art handling, exhibition design, collections management, conservation technician work, or the development, management, coordination or administration of civic or community-based arts & culture programs, public or fine arts programs., • Ability to lift, carry, and move artworks and materials up to 20-50 lbs. with or without assistance., • Maintain a valid driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Authority’s vehicle insurance policy., • Master’s degree in art, performing arts, art history, arts administration, conservation, museum studies, public administration or other closely related field;, • Certificate in art conservation, preventive conservation, or collections care., • OSHA safety certification and/or lift operation certification., • Certification in museum-standard art handling and packing procedures. *Driving is an Essential Function This role requires regular driving as a critical part of performing work-related duties, specifically involving the operation of Airport Authority vehicles. A valid California driver’s license is required, along with strict adherence to all traffic laws and safety regulations. Applicants must maintain an acceptable driving record to operate Authority vehicles. Compliance with Airport Authority vehicle use policies, including safety protocols and reporting requirements, is mandatory.
