Job Description Job Title: Maintenance Lead (2nd Shift, Multi-Craft) Job Description This 2nd shift Maintenance Lead role is a 100% hands-on, multi-craft position responsible for performing mechanical, electrical, and PLC preventative and reactive maintenance on heavy industrial equipment. You will serve as the primary troubleshooting expert on your shift, supporting and guiding two other maintenance technicians while ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of complex machinery across multiple plants. Responsibilities • Lead a small team of maintenance technicians on 2nd shift, serving as the primary troubleshooting resource and working side-by-side with the team in a fully hands-on capacity., • Perform preventative and reactive maintenance on industrial equipment including hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, 50–1500 HP motors, bushings, bearings, shafts, gear sets, flywheels, transmissions, cylinders, safety sensors, switches, shears, rotary knives, turn style tables, spindles, turrets, uncoilers, pickling lines, cold roll mills, furnaces (including confined space areas), coolers and chillers, and air compressors., • Rebuild and repair mechanical components such as cylinders, rods, bearing systems, and valves, including teardown, component replacement, and reassembly of large-scale parts up to approximately 12 feet in length., • Install and maintain safety devices such as safety curtains and safety sensors, and ensure all work complies with plant safety standards and procedures., • Perform electrical maintenance and troubleshooting on systems from 12V up to 480V 3-phase, including AC/DC circuits, using multimeters and other diagnostic tools to identify and resolve issues., • Read and interpret valve schematics, electrical schematics, and symbols to diagnose faults and execute effective repairs., • Troubleshoot and repair safety circuits and related control systems to maintain safe and reliable operation of equipment., • Perform PLC troubleshooting, including following ladder logic, checking inputs and outputs, swapping or replacing sensors, fuses, and switches, and changing drives as needed to restore equipment functionality., • Support troubleshooting and maintenance on PLC-based systems, ensuring accurate diagnosis of switch errors and control issues and implementing corrective actions., • Access elevated equipment using manlifts, including heights up to approximately 60 feet, to perform inspections, repairs, and maintenance tasks safely., • Work in and around furnaces, silos, and other large-scale industrial equipment, including confined spaces where required, following all safety protocols., • Coordinate maintenance activities across multiple plants on the campus, responding to breakdowns and prioritizing tasks to minimize downtime., • Document maintenance work, repairs, and modifications accurately and communicate equipment status and issues to leadership and fellow technicians., • Promote and model a strong safety culture by following lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and encouraging safe work practices among the team., • Assist in training and mentoring other technicians by sharing knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and PLC systems and best practices for troubleshooting. Essential Skills • 8–10+ years of industrial multi-craft maintenance experience in a heavy manufacturing or industrial environment., • 3+ years of experience in a Maintenance Lead or similar leadership role supporting other technicians., • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, including hands-on experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, gears, bearing systems, valves, and the ability to add safety curtains when needed., • Proven ability to tear down, rebuild, and reassemble large cylinders and rods (including components up to approximately 12 feet in length) without hesitation or intimidation., • Solid electrical troubleshooting experience with systems from 12V up to 480V 3-phase, including AC/DC, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and use of multimeters., • Ability to read and interpret valve schematics, electrical schematics, and electrical symbols to diagnose and correct issues., • Experience troubleshooting safety circuits and ensuring safe operation of equipment and control systems., • PLC troubleshooting experience, including reading and following ladder logic, checking inputs and outputs, changing drives and sensors, identifying switch errors, and correcting them as needed., • Comfort working at heights up to approximately 60 feet using manlifts to access elevated equipment for maintenance., • Physical ability to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds as part of regular maintenance activities., • Strong safety mindset, consistently prioritizing safe work practices and compliance with safety procedures., • High school diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications • PLC programming skills, with experience in the primary PLC platform used on site., • Formal education, journeyman credentials, or technical certifications in related fields., • Mechatronics certification or willingness to pursue a Mechatronics certification, supported by the employer’s education reimbursement program., • Experience with plumbing and welding in an industrial maintenance setting., • Experience using Rockwell testing tools or similar diagnostic equipment., • Strong troubleshooting mindset and willingness to “dig in” on complex, large-scale mechanical and electrical issues., • Effective communication skills to support and guide other technicians and collaborate with cross-functional teams. Work Environment The role is based in a large industrial campus with four plants, where you may support multiple facilities as needed. The equipment is older, extremely large, and can be massive in both length and height, including furnaces and silos, which require comfort working around substantial machinery. The environment can be messy, dirty, greasy, oily in some areas, and hot in others, reflecting a heavy industrial setting. You will occasionally work in confined spaces and at significant heights, up to approximately 60 feet, using manlifts to access equipment for maintenance and repair. This position is on 2nd shift, Monday through Friday, from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and includes a shift premium and an additional premium for the lead role. Uniform service is provided, and appropriate safety attire, including steel-toe footwear and prescription safety glasses, is supported through annual vouchers, ensuring you have the necessary gear to work safely and effectively in this demanding environment.
