Project Officer – Archaeology (BAJR Grade 5) Location: United Kingdom (with opportunities to work on projects in the Middle East) Contract: Permanent, Full-time Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience About Chronicle Heritage UK Chronicle Heritage UK is a leading global archaeology and heritage consultancy delivering innovative, high-quality archaeological and heritage solutions across the UK and internationally. We are now seeking a Project Officer to join our dynamic and growing UK team, working on a diverse portfolio of field and urban archaeology projects, with potential involvement in our expanding programs in the Middle East. Job Description Purpose of the Role The Project Officer will lead the archaeological direction and management of medium to large-scale fieldwork and post-excavation projects, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency. You will be responsible for team leadership, technical delivery, and contributing to project planning and reporting. Key Responsibilities • Manage archaeological fieldwork projects to time, budget, and Chronicle Heritage quality standards., • Supervise, mentor, and develop field teams, including Archaeologists and Project Supervisors., • Ensure accurate archaeological recording, interpretation, and reporting., • Prepare and author fieldwork reports, stratigraphic analyses, and publication summaries., • Contribute to pre-project planning, including WSIs, resource planning, and programme scheduling., • Maintain strong liaison with clients, curators, and contractors., • Uphold and promote health and safety best practices, including preparation of risk assessments and method statements., • Support senior management with bid preparation, cost estimation, and programme management., • Contribute to professional and public engagement, including publications and presentations. Essential • Degree in Archaeology or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience., • Proven experience supervising complex field and/or urban archaeological projects in a commercial context., • Strong knowledge of British archaeology and current fieldwork standards., • Demonstrable experience writing clear, accurate archaeological reports., • Sound understanding of project delivery in relation to budgets and timelines., • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills., • Full, clean UK driving license., • Competence in Microsoft Office and archaeological databases., • Membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (ACIfA or above)., • Experience preparing project designs, WSIs, and tender bids., • Knowledge of resource and program management systems., • Experience of international fieldwork or consultancy, particularly in the Middle East., • Specialist expertise in a particular archaeological area (e.g., urban archaeology, landscape studies, or building recording)., • Surveying and GIS/CAD skills., • SMSTS or equivalent health and safety qualifications., • Competitive salary and benefits package., • Opportunities for UK and overseas project work, including the Middle East., • Training and professional development support, including CIfA membership., • Flexible working arrangements.
