Our client is a defence technology company. We're building the UK's next generation engineering powerhouse, providing critical technology that strengthens national security and resilience. We specialise in turning advances in sensing, AI, and communications into operational capability for the edge, where connectivity may be degraded or denied. Our work focuses on accelerating the deployment of technology, improving decision-making for frontline teams, and protecting people and critical assets in demanding environments. Headquartered in Bristol, our client employs around 200 people and operates over 20,000 square feet of engineering and manufacturing facilities. We have a growing international footprint and are one of Europe's fastest-growing engineering businesses. About the role We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to build the Internal Developer Platform that our engineering teams depend on - a platform built from the ground up for agentic engineering. Our software teams work on hard problems under tight deadlines. Your job is to make sure the platform underneath them is not one of those problems. Working within the Platforms team, you will architect and own the tooling, infrastructure, workflows, and components that our client's developers build on. That means repeatable development environments, paved paths that are faster than the alternatives, and platform services that teams adopt because they want to, not because they have to. You will lead the implementation of agentic AI and passionately advocate for its use: rolling out coding agents, embedding them into CI/CD and day-to-day development, and building the harnesses and infrastructure that let them run securely, efficiently, and transparently. You will track new developer tooling and agentic AI closely, adopt what works before most teams have heard of it, and enjoy convincing others to do the same. This role gives you a whole engineering organisation to do that for. This is some of the highest-impact engineering in the company. It is not a delivery role. You will not be assigned to customer projects, and you will not review delivery PRs. Your users are our client engineers, and the platform is the product. Candidates must be eligible for SC clearance. More information about security clearance is available here: Salary For senior roles, compensation is tailored to the scope of the role and the specific experience a candidate brings. Because that can vary significantly, we do not always publish a fixed salary band. We will, however, discuss compensation openly at the first stage of the process and can share an indicative range before either side invests significant time. Key areas of responsibility As a Principal Software Engineer at our client, you will: Build the Internal Developer Platform: design, build, and run the platform that our client's software teams and their coding agents depend on to write, test, ship, and operate code. Own software engineering infrastructure and workflows end-to-end: source control, CI/CD, artefact management, secrets, and the environments our software runs in. Champion new tooling and best practice: track what the best engineering organisations are doing, evaluate it rigorously, and bring in whatever earns its place. Raise standards through influence: set technical direction and standards across teams you do not manage, by building things that people choose to use. Lead the implementation of agentic AI: roll out coding agents across engineering workflows and own how and where they're used. Advocate for agentic engineering across the business: run evaluations, evidence the benefits, and train teams on effective use. Build the infrastructure that makes agents trustworthy: sandboxing, permissioning, audit logging, and observability so that what an agent did is efficient, secure, and fully transparent to the engineer who has to stand behind it. Create repeatable development environments: make local, cloud, and target-representative environments reproducible, quick to stand up, and identical for every engineer. Key skills, experience and behaviours We don't expect anyone to be a 10/10 in every area, and you don't need to tick every single bullet point to apply. What follows is a list of the skills and experience that we think matter most for this role. Different strengths are welcome. Substantial experience as a principal or staff software engineer. Demonstrable experience building developer platforms, internal tooling, and paved paths used by engineering team. Hands-on experience implementing agentic AI in real engineering workflows (beyond individual experimentation). Experience designing the guardrails around agentic AI: sandboxing, permissioning, audit logging, or observability for tools operating with elevated access. Deep, hands-on experience of CI/CD, infrastructure as code, containers, and Kubernetes. Experience of building and deploying reproducible development environments. A track record of driving adoption by persuasion and good product decisions, not mandate. Clear written communication, including documentation that engineers actually read. About you You treat the platform as a product and your colleagues as customers, and you measure yourself on their throughput rather than your own. You notice friction that everyone else has learned to live with, and you fix it. You're a genuine advocate for agentic engineering. You make the case for it with evidence, help teams adopt it well, and are honest about where it isn't the right tool. You are opinionated about tooling and you change your mind when the evidence changes. You are comfortable owning something long-lived rather than moving between projects. You can tell the difference between a genuinely better tool and a fashionable one. You are honest about trade-offs, including the ones in your own work. No prior defence experience is required. We're interested in people who've built and run developer platforms in demanding environments, wherever that was. Working at our client We are committed to building a flexible, inclusive, and enabling company. Our aim is to create a diverse team of talented people with unique skills, experience, and backgrounds, so please apply and come as you are! We also recognise the importance of flexible working and support this wherever we can. We typically operate a flexible, hybrid-working model, with an average 3 days in the office each week (dependent on the role). We welcome the opportunity to discuss flexibility, part-time working requirements and/or workplace adjustments with all our applicants. Our client is a Disability Confident Committed company, and we actively encourage people with disabilities and health conditions to apply for our roles. Please let us know your requirements early on so that we can make sure you have everything you need up front to help make the recruitment process and experience as easy as possible. Finally, if you feel that you don't meet all the criteria included above but have transferable skills and relevant experience, we'd still love to hear from you! TPBN1_UKTJ

Are you a software developer who loves not just building great products, but running them in production too? We are seeking a talented Senior Associate Engineer to join our dynamic cross-functional team and help shape the future of digital innovation. First and foremost you will be a capable, hands‑on developer who enjoys designing and building features across the stack, and, as a broad, T‑shaped engineer, you will also bring a particular interest in the operational side of engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), observability, and the delivery pipelines that get our work safely to production. This is a blended role: you will spend plenty of your time building product features as well as running them, and you will genuinely enjoy both. If you are passionate about Digital products, technology, and driving meaningful outcomes, this is the role for you! As a Senior Associate Engineer you will be a capable software developer, comfortable designing and building features across the stack, with a solid grounding in full lifecycle software development. On top of that, you will have a genuine interest in what happens after the code is written, how we deploy, operate, observe, and continuously improve our services in production. Designing, building, deploying, and supporting software across front and backend stacks Building and maintaining automated CI/CD pipelines and test automation to facilitate a seamless, repeatable route to production for Azure hosted solutions Operating and supporting environments up to and including production, instrumenting services with meaningful observability so we can trust our releases and respond quickly when something goes wrong You will also have a product mindset: you care about customer outcomes, and you want to make data-informed decisions. • Design and build product features across the front and back end, engaging fully in the development lifecycle of applications and tools and contributing hands‑on to all development tasks, from coding to reviewing and releasing to production. Collaborate closely with team members, product owners, and stakeholders., • Live the "you build it, you run it" model. Implement and refine DevOps practices, building and owning CI/CD pipelines, managing infrastructure as code, and instrumenting services with observability (metrics, logs, and traces) so their health is visible. Take part in operating live services, including release management, alerting, and incident response, while actively reducing toil, technical debt, and manual effort through automation., • Take ownership of personal learning paths, continually acquiring new skills, particularly across operations, SRE, and observability, to enhance team solutions and individual performance. You are a capable, hands‑on software developer who enjoys designing and building product features across the front and back end. The operations and SRE focus in this role is something you bring in addition to strong development skills, not instead of them, and you should be equally happy shipping product features as you are improving how we run them. You have developed modern component‑oriented front end applications using frameworks and libraries and have a good appreciation of UX (User eXperience). Solid working knowledge of C# and the .NET stack. Our current tech stack is primarily Microsoft / Azure focused; C# is our primary language. Advocate of key principles such as SOLID and CLEAN code, applying to all areas of development. Keen to write code that is self‑explanatory and easy to maintain. You have a sound grasp of modern engineering principles and prefer working in small iterations that optimise feedback. You like to validate hypotheses via experiments. Alongside your development work, a genuine interest in operations and Site Reliability Engineering, and you care about how services actually behave in production, not just whether they pass their tests. Experience (or a strong desire to grow) building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automating the path to production. We use GitHub Actions and Octopus Deploy, but an understanding of the principles behind CI/CD is more important than the specific tooling you have used. You will have worked in an environment that deploys regularly to production. An appreciation of observability, using metrics, logs, and traces (for example Azure Monitor / Application Insights, Datadog, Grafana/Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry) to understand system health, and an interest in SLIs/SLOs and alerting. Comfort with, or enthusiasm to learn, Infrastructure as Code to provision and manage environments in a repeatable, reviewable way. A willingness to take part in operational duties such as releases, incident response, and keeping live services healthy and reliable. You have an awareness of security principles and best practices to ensure secure software delivery. You are committed to continuous learning, staying abreast of evolving industry technologies and trends, and are keen to share and contribute to our community. You have experience working within an agile environment; waterfall projects are a red flag to you. You own change all the way to production, and the idea that a different team would test your work, or that it will not rapidly ship to production, does not sit well with you. You enjoy working with others and contributing to technical excellence as part of an active community. • Experience with Okta (or a comparable identity and access management platform, such as Microsoft Entra ID) for authentication and authorisation., • Hands‑on experience with Terraform for Infrastructure as Code.
