MEP Design Manager - Data Centres Leading Engineering Consultancy Up to £90,000 + Package About the Client Our client is a leading engineering consultancy focused on delivering innovative, sustainable, and high-performance projects. Role Purpose We are seeking a Design Manager (MEP) to lead multi-disciplinary design delivery for high-profile data-centre projects. This role combines technical and commercial leadership, overseeing all design phases, managing programme, budget, and risk, while supporting procurement, construction, commissioning, and post-handover activities. As the primary client liaison on design matters, the Design Manager will champion design excellence, collaboration, and sustainability in mission-critical environments, ensuring high-quality outcomes across complex, high-energy facilities. Key Responsibilities • Project Delivery & Design Management * Lead and coordinate MEP design from concept through handover, integrating multiple disciplines to deliver compliant, high-quality designs. * Manage programme, cost, and risk for all design phases escalate and resolve issues promptly to meet commercial objectives. * Maintain design documentation, including risk registers, change logs, and QA processes. * Produce and review technical deliverables: specifications, calculations, single-line diagrams, equipment schedules, and reports. * Facilitate design reviews, client meetings, and multidisciplinary workshops. * Support procurement, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), site inspections, commissioning, and post-handover activities. Client & Stakeholder Management • Act as primary client contact for design matters, managing expectations and enhancing satisfaction. * Build and maintain strong relationships with architects, structural engineers, ICT specialists, contractors, commissioning agents, and suppliers. * Identify and develop business opportunities through client engagement and industry networking. People Leadership & Development • Lead project engineers, designers, and consultants through mentoring, coaching, and performance management. * Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that promotes knowledge sharing and professional growth. * Ensure adherence to the consultancy's quality, health and safety, and sustainability standards. Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent). Chartered Engineer status preferred or working towards chartership. * 7-12 years' experience managing MEP design on data-centre or mission-critical projects. * Strong technical knowledge of data-centre systems: UPS, standby generation, electrical distribution, earthing, battery systems, CRAC/CRAH, chilled water systems, pumping, and controls/BMS. * Proven experience leading multidisciplinary design teams and delivering projects on time and budget. * Experience managing complex client relationships and stakeholder communications. * Proficiency with BIM tools (Revit, 3D coordination) and industry-standard design/calculation software. Desirable Skills & Experience • Knowledge of Uptime Institute tiering, ISO/IEC critical facilities standards, and tier/certification processes. * Experience in sustainable design and low-carbon engineering solutions for high-energy facilities. * Strong commercial awareness with excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.
