Job DescriptionJob Title: Maintenance Mechanic Job Description The Maintenance Mechanic supports a high-volume chemical manufacturing facility by keeping production lines and plant equipment running safely and efficiently. This role combines hands-on mechanical and electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, and preventive care on a wide range of machinery, including packaging and conveying systems. You will complete an initial training period on first shift before moving to an off-shift assignment and will work in a unionized environment with regular Saturday overtime. The position is physically demanding and involves working around chemicals used in products such as mothballs and toilet bowl cleaners, with full personal protective equipment provided. Responsibilities • Learn the operation of each production line and its stations, and operate and train others on each station as needed., • Examine, test, maintain, and repair all plant machinery and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations, including occasional design and fabrication of parts., • Perform preventive maintenance on production equipment, including reading and interpreting equipment manuals to determine proper procedures., • Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems, replace or repair parts, and make necessary adjustments to restore optimal equipment performance., • Disassemble, repair, and reassemble equipment using a variety of hand and power tools., • Set up and change over tooling on machines to support different products and production runs., • Record and log maintenance repairs, inspections, and adjustments on equipment, and clearly communicate actions, irregularities, and findings to appropriate personnel., • Fully understand and comply with lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and all applicable safety protocols., • Follow all plant rules and safety regulations, including the proper use of personal protective equipment when working with or around chemicals and machinery., • Troubleshoot motor control centers and mechanical packaging equipment, including presses, filling lines, conveying systems, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic systems., • Program and adjust variable frequency drives (VFDs) up to 480V as required for equipment operation., • Install and teach others how to install photo-eyes, ultrasonic sensors, and safety light curtains on production equipment., • Set up messages and adjust parameters on continuous ink jet date coders when needed., • Work with human–machine interfaces (HMIs), understanding their functions and capabilities to support equipment operation and troubleshooting., • Read and interpret electrical and wiring schematics to support electrical troubleshooting and repairs., • Wire circuits that include safety emergency stops, continuous, momentary, and timing relays, control heaters, encoders, and other electronic components., • Identify, troubleshoot, and locate inputs and outputs (I/Os) on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Automation Direct, and Siemens., • Communicate effectively with plant leadership, supervisors, and coworkers to coordinate maintenance activities and minimize production downtime., • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, and use personal tools and company tools properly and responsibly., • Perform physically demanding tasks such as standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, turning, reaching, and handling small items for extended periods., • Work effectively in a fast-paced, often loud production environment and remain flexible with changing work projects and priorities.Essential Skills, • At least 4+ years of industrial maintenance experience, including equipment breakdowns, repairs, and production line changeovers., • Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance in a manufacturing environment., • Proficiency in troubleshooting motor control centers and mechanical packaging equipment, including presses, filling lines, conveying systems, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic systems., • Ability to program and adjust variable frequency drives (VFDs) up to 480V., • Experience installing and supporting photo-eyes, ultrasonic sensors, and safety light curtains., • Ability to work with continuous ink jet date coders, including setting up messages and changing parameters., • Working knowledge of human–machine interfaces (HMIs), including their functions and capabilities., • Ability to read and interpret electrical and wiring schematics., • Capability to wire circuits that include safety emergency stops, continuous, momentary, and timing relays, control heaters, encoders, and other electronic components., • Ability to identify, troubleshoot, and locate inputs and outputs (I/Os) on PLCs from platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Automation Direct, and Siemens., • Strong knowledge of hand and power tools and their safe use., • Ability to follow written and oral directives from plant leadership and supervisors., • Strong safety mindset with the ability to follow company safety rules and apply critical thinking to identify and address hazards., • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with people of varying skills and backgrounds., • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and tasks., • High level of motivation and self-direction, with the ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced production environment., • Sufficient vision and hearing to safely work around machinery, forklifts, and high-lift equipment., • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including frequent standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, turning, reaching, and handling small components.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience with PLCs and robotics is a plus., • Experience with continuous improvement or reliability-focused maintenance is beneficial., • Comfort working in a chemical manufacturing environment, including around products such as mothballs and toilet bowl cleaners, with appropriate PPE., • Flexibility to work different shifts based on seniority and business needs., • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with plant leadership, supervisors, Work Environment This position is based in a chemical manufacturing facility that produces mothballs and toilet cleaning tablets. You will work in a union shop where shifts are assigned based on seniority. Training occurs over the first 60 working days on first shift (approximately 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). After training, you will likely move to second shift (approximately 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.), with the possibility of third shift (approximately 10:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) depending on plant needs. There is mandatory overtime on Saturdays planned for much of the year, typically on a schedule of two Saturdays on and one Saturday off. The production environment is fast-paced and often loud, with frequent interaction with machinery, forklifts, and high-lift equipment. The work is physically demanding, requiring standing and walking for most of the shift; frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs and occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs; pushing and pulling loads; climbing or crawling; and repeated bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, turning, reaching above the shoulders, reaching outward, and handling small items. You will regularly use small hand and power tools and maintain a forceful grip during tasks. Personal protective equipment is required and provided for working with and around chemicals and equipment. Steel-toe shoes are required, and you must wear safety glasses and ear protection at all times in designated areas, with gloves and masks or respirators used as needed. You are expected to use your own basic tools, including metric and standard wrenches, a multimeter, various drivers, and a flashlight. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, and requires constant attention to safe work practices.
