Job DescriptionJob Title: Controller Location: Albuquerque, NM (Hybrid) Employment Type: Full-Time Compensation: $90k-$112k Position Overview A mission-driven, grant-funded nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting operations, ensure financial integrity, and support long-term organizational stability. This role is critical to maintaining compliance with government and grant regulations while driving strong judgment, problem-solving, and collaboration across the organization. The Controller will oversee financial reporting, grant accounting, audits, and internal controls while managing a small but impactful accounting team. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on finance leader who thrives in a collaborative environment and brings both technical expertise and practical decision-making skills. Key Responsibilities Financial Close & Accounting Operations • Oversee all aspects of the monthly close and financial statement preparation in accordance with GAAP, • Supervise accounting staff responsible for reconciliations, journal entries, and financial analyses, • Review, approve, and post journal entries, weekly check runs, and grant-related transactions, • Ensure all financial activity is accurately recorded, documented, and reported, • Maintain and manage the general ledger, account structure, and system security, • Coordinate annual close activities including audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting, • Maintain capital asset, depreciation, and net asset schedulesFinancial Reporting & Leadership Support, • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership and stakeholders, • Support senior finance leadership with reporting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis, • Oversee cash management, banking activity, and short- and long-term cash projections, • Monitor administrative and program cost ratios to ensure organizational compliance and efficiencyGrant Accounting & Compliance, • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local grant regulations and reporting requirements, • Review grant budgets prior to submission to ensure accuracy and compliance, • Oversee grant revenue recognition, drawdowns, invoicing, and receivables, • Prepare grant-related financial reports in partnership with program leadership, • Apply and reconcile indirect cost allocations in accordance with Uniform GuidancePolicies, Procedures & Internal Controls, • Develop, maintain, and improve financial policies and procedures, • Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets and prevent fraud, • Recommend process improvements across accounting, payables, receivables, payroll, and revenue recognition, • Ensure compliance with all applicable financial regulations and reporting standardsTeam & Reporting Structure, • Manages a small accounting team (approximately 3 direct reports), • Works closely with CFO who supports monthly reporting and strategic guidance, • Highly collaborative environment with strong leadership supportIdeal Candidate Profile, • Strong problem-solving ability and sound professional judgment, • Comfortable making difficult decisions in ambiguous situations, • Brings a practical, common-sense approach to leadership and financial management, • Works well across teams and fosters a collaborative, respectful environment, • Values accountability, ownership, and long-term commitmentQualifications Education • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required, • CPA and/or MBA strongly preferredExperience, • Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience in a nonprofit environment, • Extensive experience with grant-funded organizations and government compliance, • Experience developing and applying indirect cost rates, • Prior experience with nonprofit audits, Single Audit, and Form 990 preparationTechnical Skills, • Strong general accounting knowledge and GAAP application, • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required, • Experience with accounting systemsAdditional Requirements, • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently, • Strong written and verbal communication skills, • High integrity and attention to detail, • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs, • Background check required, • Occasional travel and extended hours may be requiredWork Arrangement, • Hybrid flexibility, • Very flexible, supportive work environmentCompensation & Benefits, • Salary up to $112k, • Comprehensive benefits package including:, • PTO and paid holidays, • Monthly healthcare contribution, • Free vision and dental coverage for employee and dependents, • Retirement plan with employer matchPay Details: $90,000.00 to $112,000.00 per year Search managed by: Halli Gentry Equal Opportunity Employer/Veterans/Disabled Military connected talent encouraged to apply To read our Candidate Privacy Information Statement, which explains how we will use your information, please navigate to The Company will consider qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records in accordance with federal, state, and local laws and/or security clearance requirements, including, as applicable: • The California Fair Chance Act, • Los Angeles City Fair Chance Ordinance, • Los Angeles County Fair Chance Ordinance for Employers, • San Francisco Fair Chance OrdinanceMassachusetts Candidates Only: It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or continued employment.
