Job Description Work Schedule: 3-5 hours per week; hours may increase during tournaments, weekends required; shifts based on operational need of the organization OVERVIEW Associated Students, Inc. employs student-focused professionals with equity-mindsets. Established in 1963, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time staff. ASI is a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with an indirect reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 27,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. Currently, the guiding ideas of the organization are "under construction" as the team re-imagines its vision, mission, and core values. ASI is looking for dynamic team members who value team learning, co-creation, and adaptability to best serve the needs of our students. The Intramural Sports program strives to provide opportunities for the campus community to participate in over 20 different sports in a dynamic, fun, and recreational environment. Approximately 1,200-1,500 students participate in Intramural Sports leagues and tournaments each semester, including Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Flag Football, Softball, Tennis, Badminton, and more. The Intramural Sports Program employs about 60 students annually as Officials, Lead Officials, Assistant Supervisors, and Supervisors. POSITION DEFINITION Under the general supervision of the Competitive Sports Coordinator, the Sport Clubs Official assists in providing a fair and safe sport clubs events and activities. The Sport Clubs Official is responsible for officiating sport clubs' games. ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Officiate sport clubs' games and competitions to maintain standards of play and to ensure the game rules are observed, • Judge performance in sporting competitions to determine a winner, when applicable, • Keep track of event times, starting or stopping play, when necessary, • Inspect sporting equipment and/or examine participants to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations, • Confer with other sporting officials, coaches, players, and facility managers to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems, • Ensure compliance with Campus Recreation’s rules, policies, and guidelines during sport clubs' activities, • Track scores, manage game play, and serve as a liaison to team captains and coaches for various sport clubs, • Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service, • Document and report any equipment malfunctions or other facility hazards, • Attending meetings and training as required, • Perform other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS • Advanced officiating certification (e.g., high school officiating), • One year of officiating experience, • Demonstrated ability to understand principles of the related sports, • Ability to learn and apply the rules and regulations of the related sports, • Dependable with the ability to make independent decisions, • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community, • Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism, model sportsman-like conduct, provide quality customer service, and exhibit a positive attitude while interacting with participants, spectators, and coaches, • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, • Ability to satisfactorily complete a background check (including a criminal records check) BACKGROUND CHECK A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with Associated Students, Inc., Cal Poly Pomona. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current ASI employees who apply for this position. WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work is occasionally performed outdoors in varying weather conditions including extreme heat. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, run, talk, see, hear, and utilize manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and verbal communication. Must be able to utilize office equipment (telephones, calculator, copier, fax), sit, crawl, climb, bend, and lift to 45 pounds. Position subject to occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Annual bloodborne pathogen training is required. The initial training must be completed before the employee is assigned duties that may result in exposure to blood or bodily fluids. Hepatitis B vaccination will be offered after the training.
