Job DescriptionPosition Summary: The Dean of Students provides leadership and oversight for all areas within Student Development and Success—including athletics, campus ministry, counseling services, student conduct, campus safety, dining services, the on-call support system, student support and crisis response, residence life, student engagement and leadership, and the A-Store and mailroom. Ensure the division clearly articulates and upholds the College’s mission, vision, and values, representing the College with credibility and integrity both internally and externally. Serve as the primary liaison to students on all matters related to the student experience. This is a full-time role that requires some evening and weekend commitments. Principal Responsibilities: Student Engagement & Campus Life • Lead efforts to assess student interests and needs, enhance existing offerings, and ensure campus life policies and practices cultivate a vibrant, inclusive community., • Establish and maintain a strong, visible presence on campus; attend campus-wide cultural, social, and athletic events, and build positive relationships with the external community., • Provide strategic oversight for budgets supporting student life operations, ensuring strong financial stewardship and alignment with institutional goals., • Serve as an advisor to the Alverno Student Government (ASG) executive board, attending meetings and events., • Oversee the development and execution of key student programs such as Orientation, Welcome Week, and Community Service Day – creating traditions foster connection and belonging., • Maintain active contact with students to ensure programs and initiatives remain responsive to evolving needs., • Provide strategic oversight for student life budgets, ensuring responsible stewardship aligned with institutional goals., • Conduct regular department evaluations and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness., • Conduct regular staff evaluations and provide coaching and direction for growth and improvement., • Lead development and annual revision of the Student Handbook that governs the conduct of all degree-seeking students., • Provide leadership and oversight for the student conduct process, ensuring fair, consistent, and developmentally appropriate implementation of conduct procedures, and serving as the conduct officer for upper-level cases., • Establish, maintain, and regularly refine policies related to student conduct, student engagement, and student success to ensure clarity, equity, legal compliance, and responsiveness to evolving student needs and trends., • Liaise with academic leadership and faculty to evaluate and revise academic policies to remove barriers and support student persistence and achievement., • Serve as the institution’s Title IX coordinator., • Develop, coordinate, and deliver Title IX and sex-discrimination training, awareness programs, and compliant reporting processes for all students., • Provide overarching leadership for crisis response efforts, ensuring a coordinated, institution-wide approach to student crises of all types and severity., • Develop and maintain crisis response protocols and lead the institution’s Threat Assessment Team., • Serve as a backup member of the on-call team, providing 24/7 support to staff and guiding responses to significant emergencies., • Collaborate closely with mental health professionals, law enforcement, and other campus and community partners to ensure student safety and well-being., • Partner with the Vice President for Academic Affairs to develop and use robust retention and persistence data to support student success initiatives., • Liaise with academic leadership and faculty to evaluate and revise academic policies that support student success and remove unnecessary barriers to achievement., • Ensure effective use of student affairs systems and case management platforms (e.g., StarRez, Pharos 360)., • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or related field; Doctorate preferred., • Minimum of five years of progressive leadership experience in Student Affairs within higher education., • Demonstrated expertise in student conduct, crisis response, case management, and student support services., • Experience serving on (or leading) a Behavioral Intervention Team/Threat Assessment Team., • Direct experience with Title IX administration, including investigations, compliance, or prevention programming., • Proven knowledge of federal and state regulations impacting student life (e.g., FERPA, Clery, Title IX, ADA, VAWA)., • Strong supervision and team-building skills, including staff coaching, performance management, and organizational development., • Demonstrated ability to create inclusive, student-centered environments and lead initiatives that advance equity and belonging., • Experience managing complex budgets, multi-department operations, and/or vendor/contract relationships (e.g., dining services, campus safety partners)., • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across academic and administrative units., • Proven ability to interpret and apply institutional policies and legal requirements while supporting holistic student development., • Experience supervising residence life, counseling services, campus ministry, or campus safety functions., • Experience leading large-scale student programs such as orientation, welcome week, or high-impact co-curricular initiatives., • Training in threat assessment, trauma-informed practices, conflict mediation, or crisis intervention., • Proficiency with Student Affairs systems and platforms (e.g., StarRez, Pharos 360, Maxient, or comparable systems).
