Mount Sinai Hospital has a companion unit where women and their newborns spend the first few days recovering from the birth and learning how to care for themselves and their newborn infants. With 31 postpartum rooms, we are able to provide a quiet environment for our mother baby couplets and their significant other for a 24 hour rooming-in experience. Our nurses are highly skilled in the medical and nursing care that is required for our patients as well as being able to provide highly interactive education for our families. Our lactation consultants are available to provide high-level breastfeeding support as they help lead the way in our Baby-Friendly Hospital designation journey. We also provide high-risk medical management and nursing support for pregnant women in our unit and the competent care needed for our antepartum patients who may have problem pregnancies of any gestational age. Along with our social workers and chaplain, we are able to provide a variety of services that support the complex needs of our families. Our newborn nursery is only a way-station for most of our newborns who pass through quickly after birth. But for babies who need continuing medical care, our nurses are skilled in caring for these babies and providing support for their families. A team of obstetricians, pediatricians and neonatologists are available 24/7 to work closely with our caregivers and our families. We have such a close bond with our families and we often enjoy visits from them as their children grow and as their mothers return in later years to have more babies with us. We are proud of our two Daisy nurse award recipients we have had in the past year.
