Job Description STUDENT INTERN – AIR QUALITY The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) is seeking a creative, organized and enthusiastic individual to serve as an intern for Air Quality public education and outreach. ABOUT US For more than a decade, MARC has been at the forefront of environmental protection efforts in the Kansas City region. MARC has established innovative planning and policy programs in the air, water, solid waste and emerging energy sectors. Through these programs, MARC works with local governments, the EPA, the respective environmental protection agencies in both Kansas and Missouri and the public to preserve and protect our region’s most valuable natural resources and to ensure that communities and individuals incorporate sustainable practices in both their current and future plans and activities. ABOUT THIS POSITION This position will be responsible for education and outreach support related to MARC’s Air Quality and environmental programs. The Air Quality internship is expected to start May 2026 and continue through December 2026. The intern may work full time during the summer and up to 20 hours per week during the school year. Daytime scheduling will be flexible. Weekend or evening event work will be periodically required and will primarily occur during late-spring to late-summer. Provided there is enough funding, the internship may be extended into the spring semester 2027. What you’ll do • Write, create and curate social media content., • Help organize special events and workshops., • Engage the public at tabling and outreach events. Evening and weekend availability may be applicable to these events., • Research and help staff in environmental planning, community outreach and public involvement as needed. ABOUT YOU Skills you’ll need • Excellent oral and written communication skills., • Aptitude for public interaction in a variety of contexts., • Ability to manage multiple projects under deadline., • Student currently enrolled in a formal degree program or entering a formal degree in the next three months., • Education or past work experience in communications, public speaking, journalism, public affairs or planning with an interest in environmental issues., • Knowledge and familiarity with graphic design software., • Experience with public education campaigns., • Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills to effectively interact with internal staff, governmental bodies, general public and outside organizations., • Strong computer skills using spreadsheets and word processing software., • Experience with social media platforms., • Ability to research, integrate, analyze and interpret data from various sources to produce information and reports. PAY AND BENEFITS Internships are classified as hourly positions with no benefits and will be paid at the rate of $18/hour for undergraduate students and $20/hr for graduate students.
