Job Description Position: Gallery Ambassador Position Level: Associate Department: Security Reports to: Safety & Security Manager Other: Full and Part-time positions, hourly, non-exempt, requiring weekend work, evenings and holiday work, including possible overtime. Job Summary The International African American Museum (IAAM) is a place of truth, history, culture and community. Our Security Team plays a vital role in protecting this sacred space while creating a welcoming and dignified experience for every visitor. Gallery Ambassadors are key to protecting the artwork, property and providing an exceptional visitor experience. By ensuring safety and accessibility, this role supports the IAAM’s mission to honor the untold stories of the African American journey at one of our country’s most sacred sites and to empower people with knowledge of the past. Key Responsibilities Safety and Security: • Monitor assigned posts including galleries, lobby, entrances, exterior grounds, maritime adjacent areas, and parking facilities to ensure the safety and preservation of artworks from visitor-related risk., • Monitor visitor traffic to maintain orderly and safe navigation through the gallery spaces., • Attentive to visitor inquiries, feedback, and concerns., • Enforce the IAAM’s guidelines, policies and safety protocols professionally and respectfully., • Respond promptly to medical incidents, disturbances, alarms, severe weather, and other emergency situations, including but not limited to fire and evacuation., • Support emergency preparedness protocols and assist first responders., • Observe and report suspicious activity, hazards, and policy violations., • Report and record safety and artwork incidents using IAAM approved documentation., • Assist in maintaining clean, uncluttered, and hazard-free public spaces., • Complete accurate and timely Daily Activity Reports and Incident Reports., • Assist with crowd management during high attendance days and special events. Visitor Engagement and Experience: • Greet visitors warmly and provide directional assistance., • Promote the IAAM’s additional offerings such as the IAAM Gift Shop and IAAM Cafe., • Attend trainings, meetings, exhibitions, and preview walkthroughs., • Assist visitors requiring ADA accommodations., • Provide calm and professional de-escalation when needed., • Maintain a polished and professional appearance at all times. Access Control: • Verify credentials for staff, contractors, vendors, and approved guests., • Maintain access logs and documentation., • Ensure restricted areas remain secure. Other: • Perform other support tasks as needed., • Adhere to company policies and procedures, standards and practices, regulatory compliance, and company directives including dress code and attendance . Job Requirements and Preferences • One plus years of prior security experience preferred, • High School diploma or equivalent required, • Experience in museum operations and program support, education, hospitality, retail, corporate or similar public environments preferred, • Knowledge of safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and incident reporting, preferred., • CPR, AED, and First Aid certification or ability to obtain, • Strong written and verbal communication skills, • Ability to stand and walk and access stairs for extended periods including outdoor patrols, • Experience using surveillance and incident reporting systems Skills and Competencies: • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills., • Remains calm and effective under pressure, handles challenges professionally., • Adaptable and flexible, able to adjust to varying situations and audiences., • Proficient in using computers, digital devices, and common software applications., • Handles sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Physical Requirements • Work Environment: In-person at the IAAM covering public internal and external areas., • Physical Demands: Extensive standing and walking; clear verbal communication; occasional lifting up to 30 lbs. Ability to navigate stairs safely up to five flights often., • Exposures: Fluctuating noise levels; large crowds; outdoor exposure during events.
