Job Description Position Summary Highway Maintenance Electrical Technician II is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of roadway electrical systems, ensuring reliability and safety. This role will work independently or with a Journeyman or Master Electrician on highway street lighting, illuminated signs, and electrical cabinets. Daily tasks include troubleshooting, wiring, replacing fixtures, testing breakers, and conducting preventive maintenance. Safety measures require setting up traffic control, following lockout procedures, and using bucket trucks for elevated work. The role involves documenting work orders, tracking materials, and communicating with supervisors and inspectors. You may also mentor Technician I team members and respond to after-hours emergencies. Attention to detail, strong troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to safety are essential for keeping roadways well-lit and reliable. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Prepare job sites by gathering, loading, securing, and staging tools, materials, and parts; verify permits, locates, and site conditions before work begins., • Measure, cut, thread, and bend conduit; install raceways, wireways, junction boxes, and enclosures to code and project specifications., • Drill openings and pull conductors; make neat, labeled terminations; perform splicing with approved methods and weatherproof fittings., • Troubleshoot electrical faults in roadway lighting and sign systems, including tracing shorts and opens, identifying ground faults, and correcting voltage and load issues., • Use meters and test equipment, including multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation resistance testers (meggers), to diagnose and validate repairs., • Install, replace, and program components such as photocells, contactors, relays, time clocks, LED drivers, luminaires, ballasts, fuses, breakers, receptacles, and switches., • Disassemble defective equipment, replace worn or damaged parts, reassemble, and test for proper operation; document root cause and corrective action., • Assist with and lead lifting, positioning, and fastening of conduit, poles, luminaires, cabinets, motors, and related equipment using appropriate rigging and hardware., • Perform preventive maintenance on poles, heads, foundations, and cabinets, including torque checks, grounding and bonding verification, cleaning, and corrosion protection., • Set up and maintain temporary traffic control for shoulder and lane work per MUTCD and company procedures; follow lockout/tagout requirements., • Work safely at heights up to 60 feet in bucket trucks or lifts and, when necessary, near water; use fall protection and rescue procedures without exception., • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections on trucks, bucket trucks, and trailers; report defects and coordinate repairs; keep vehicles clean and organized., • Maintain tools and equipment, manage consumables and spare parts, and keep accurate inventory records., • Complete daily reports, work orders, photos, and material logs on smartphone or tablet; update asset records and note GPS locations as required., • Drive company vehicles safely and tow light trailers when needed, complying with DOT and company policies., • Mentor and guide Technician I team members on safe work practices, troubleshooting steps, and quality standards., • Coordinate with supervisors, clients, and inspectors to clarify scope, request locates, and provide progress updates; elevate issues promptly when needed., • Follow all safety, environmental, and electrical codes and standards; report hazards, near misses, and incidents immediately and participate in corrective actions., • Perform other duties as assigned to support outages, storm response, night work, and project schedules. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge • Working knowledge of roadway electrical systems, including pole/cabinet wiring, luminaires, LED drivers, photocells, contactors, relays, and time clocks., • National Electrical Code fundamentals, grounding and bonding, overcurrent protection, weatherproof/rated enclosures, and corrosion protection for outdoor installations., • MUTCD work zone basics and safe bucket-truck/aerial lift practices; NFPA 70E concepts, lockout/tagout, arc-flash awareness, and fall protection., • Conduit types and fittings (EMT, RMC/PVC, LFMC), conductor types, splicing methods, and torque requirements for terminals and hardware., • Preventive maintenance practices for poles, foundations, cabinets, and circuits, including inspection points and standard failure modes., • Basic electrical theory for AC circuits, voltage drop, load balancing, and troubleshooting shorts, opens, and ground faults., • Install, route, and secure conduit and raceways; pull conductors and make neat, labeled terminations to code and project specs., • Diagnose faults using a multimeter, clamp meter, and insulation resistance tester (megger); verify repairs and return systems to service safely., • Replace and commission lighting components: luminaires, LED drivers, ballasts, fuses, breakers, photocells, relays, contactors, and timers., • Read and interpret one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, site plans, and panel schedules; follow written procedures and job hazard analyses., • Set up and maintain temporary traffic control for shoulder/lane work; coordinate spotters and vehicle positioning for safe operations., • Perform preventive maintenance: torque checks, grounding/bonding verification, cabinet cleaning, corrosion mitigation, and inventory of spare parts., • Use tablets/smartphones to complete work orders, material logs, photos, and asset updates accurately and on time., • Rig and assist with setting poles, heads, and cabinets; operate bucket trucks and lifts within training limits and manufacturer guidelines., • Work safely at heights up to 60 feet and, when required, near water and live traffic while maintaining situational awareness., • Lift up to 50 pounds, carry up to 25 pounds regularly, and perform frequent climbing, kneeling, and reaching on uneven terrain and in tight spaces., • Prioritize tasks, manage time, and adapt to changing field conditions, night work, and emergency call-outs without sacrificing safety or quality., • Communicate clearly with supervisors, inspectors, clients, and the public; escalate issues promptly and document decisions., • Drive company vehicles safely, conduct pre/post-trip inspections, and tow light trailers when needed. EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE: Required Qualifications • High school diploma or GED., • Must be at least 23 years old (per company insurance requirements)., • Must possess an active and valid Florida driver’s license with no restrictions and be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and maintain insurability under company policy., • Basic math, reading, and recordkeeping skills to complete work orders and material logs accurately., • Ability to obtain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) or Flagger certification within company timelines., • Willing and able to travel within the assigned district and report to different work sites; living within a reasonable response time to the yard is preferred., • Compliance with the company's Drug and Alcohol Policy; able to pass pre-employment and random testing. A background check and job-related physical may be required., • Able to communicate effectively with managers and coworkers; clear oral and written skills., • Physically able to lift 50 lbs. and regularly carry up to 25 lbs.; able to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods and work on uneven terrain., • Willing to work multiple shifts and varying hours, including nights, weekends, overtime, and emergency call-outs., • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions., • Four to six years of residential or commercial electrical experience, including installation, maintenance, and repair., • Demonstrated ability to work safely with 277/480-volt systems., • Proven ability to work independently, troubleshoot electrical issues, and complete quality repairs with safety as the top priority., • Bucket truck and aerial lift experience working at heights., • Roadway or exterior lighting experience, including poles, luminaires, cabinets, and photocell/contactor systems., • Experience using smartphones or tablets for work orders, documentation, and photos., • CDL A or B
