Job Description Company Overview: MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification. We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next-generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI—the convergence of computation, movement, and control. We hire ambitious, mission-driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer—and our people are driving that transformation. Position Overview: We are seeking a hands-on Engineer to join the Magnet Technology group to support the development and prototyping of high-performance, rare earth permanent magnets. The Engineer will specialize in machining processes, fixture design, tolerance analysis, and manufacturability of complex magnet geometries. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical knowledge in micron-level precision machining, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), fixture design, and process development – paired with a creative and experimental mindset suited to a fast-paced R&D environment. Position Responsibilities: • Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot machining processes for cutting, grinding, shaping, and finishing of rare earth permanent magnets with tight dimensional tolerances., • Apply GD&T principles to interpret engineering drawings and ensure precise part geometry, flatness, concentricity, and perpendicularity., • Design and fabricate custom fixtures, jigs, and tooling to safely and accurately machine brittle, magnetized or demagnetized materials., • Analyze dimensional variation and machining errors using root cause analysis and propose corrective actions., • Implement process improvements to increase throughput, reduce scrap, and enhance dimensional control., • Collaborate with design and quality engineering to ensure DFM (Design for Manufacturability) of new magnet components., • Perform hands-on prototyping and process trials, working directly with in-house equipment and technicians., • Conduct first-article inspections and support dimensional validation using vision systems, micrometers, and other metrology equipment., • Work closely with EHS to ensure that all work is done to ensure world-class health and safety, and full compliance with relevant environmental regulations., • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field., • 1+ years of hands-on experience in precision machining, preferably in a research, prototyping, or advanced manufacturing setting., • Strong proficiency in GD&T (ASME Y14.5 standard), blueprint reading, and tolerance stack-up analysis., • Experience with fixture and tooling design, especially for small, fragile, or irregularly shaped parts., • Proficient with CAD/CAM tools (e.g., SolidWorks)., • Understanding of the machining challenges posed by brittle, hard, or magnetized materials., • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and as part of a cross functional team., • Background in machining of ceramic, composite, or rare earth permanent magnets., • Experience machining components to micro-level tolerances., • Experience with magnet-related manufacturing processes (e.g. sintering, magnetization, etc.)., • Knowledge of advanced inspection techniques and digital metrology., • Familiarity with materials science and metallurgy., • Experience leading technical development projects, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects.
