Pay: $50,000/year Benefits: · Health, dental, vision insurance and more! · 15+ days of paid time off for a full year · 4 floating holidays (# of days is per year based on start date) · 401K Retirement Plan + 4% company match Schedule: Full Time, 40 hours per week • 4 x 10 hour weekday shifts (Monday-Friday) The internship is a one-year clinical training program for new graduates to gain knowledge in community medicine practice, HQHV, general surgery and dentistry with the goal of future employment within the organization. The position emphasizes learning and professional development through primary case management with mentorship and direct supervision, didactic experiences, and opportunity to develop clinic instruction and enhance the learning opportunity by mentoring senior veterinary students at the public-facing community clinics. Internship Program Details Learning Objectives • Clinical medicine skills in a community medicine practice emphasizing relationship-centered client communication skills and medical case management high-quality care in a resource-limited environment, • Surgical training to develop high-quality/high-volume spay-neuter, general surgery and dentistry skills with direct supervision from practitioners experienced in mentoring Clinic facilities have 2:1 technician: DVM ratio, in-house laboratory equipment, ultrasound, digital radiographs, dental and surgical equipment AHS Pet Clinics are full-service general practice clinics with preventative care and sick/medical case appointments Clinic Veterinary Interns will be mentored by the Managing Clinic Veterinarian and the team of AHS Pet Clinic staff DVMs who are experienced mentors working in a teaching clinic, along with adjunct mentorship from the University of Minnesota Community Medicine faculty Performance assessment will be based on goals set collaboratively by Intern and Managing Clinic Veterinarian for overall professional development, client communication skills, understanding of community medicine practice in a non-profit setting, and medical case management and surgical skill development that shows improvement in speed, accuracy, and confidence over time Essential Functions Learning: • Learn and acquire skills under the guidance of experienced professionals., • Actively participate in didactic learning (rounds, journal club, presenting to DVM and Veterinary student teams), clinical activities and on-the-job training., • Ask questions; Develop, practice, and demonstrate new skills., • Develop clinical instruction skills and enhance personal learning by serving as a mentor to senior veterinary students alongside their instructor. Clinical Training: • Conduct comprehensive physical examinations, vaccinations and routine medical procedures on customer animals, adhering to AHS protocols and policies., • Perform High Quality, High Volume Spay-Neuter (HQHVSN), general surgeries, and dental procedures. Collaborate with customers to develop accessible plans to diagnose and treat medical conditions, preventative care and provide recommendations for follow up care. Communication and Culture: • Communicate in a positive and professional manner with customers, other employees and volunteers., • Understand and interpret animal body language., • Educate customers on available preventive care and treatment options using non-judgmental communication and a spectrum of care approach., • Collaborate with veterinary team to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care of customer animals., • Actively participate in team meetings., • Collaborate with other departments and assist as needed., • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to make AHS a welcoming environment for all. Record Keeping: • Update and maintain animal records in E-Vet, meeting all requirements of the Practice Act when treating customer animals., • Ensure all controlled substances are recorded and used in accordance with DEA regulations. Technology: • Manage and view work schedule in Makeshift., • Clock in and out of shifts using ADP, if applicable., • Monitor AHS email and other messaging software. Other duties as assigned. Additional Information: Schedule and Attendance: • Regular, predictable attendance, punctuality, and availability to work during operational hours., • May be required to work at a different site or in shelter based on department needs., • May be required to attend occasional off site all staff meetings and events., • Environment can be dirty, wet, warm, and humid., • Exposure to pests such as fleas and ticks., • Possibility of being bitten or scratched. Qualifications Experience: • Excellent communication and customer service skills., • Strong multi-tasking, attention to detail and problem-solving skills., • Must be able to lift, carry, and handle animals and other items up to 50 lbs. unassisted. For animals and other items over 50 lbs., assistance from another team member is required., • Must be comfortable with the emotional aspect of work in the veterinary field and be emotionally resilient.
