We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Transportation Department Coordinator to lead and support the District's student transportation program. The ideal candidate will oversee bus routing and scheduling, coordinate transportation personnel and training, ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, and maintain a strong commitment to student safety and operational efficiency. This position requires excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills to effectively collaborate with staff, families, and community partners while ensuring reliable transportation services for students and school programs. Transportation Department Coordinator Job Summary Under direction of Supervisor Maintenance/Operations/Transportation, assist in the planning, organization and coordination of a pupil transportation program; to oversee the scheduling and assigning of bus driver personnel; to serve as Bus Driver Trainer as necessary to maintain the needs of the department; and to do other related work as required. Required Qualifications Knowledge and Application of: Methods, procedures, practices and organizational systems pertaining to a comprehensive pupil transportation program; Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, the Education Code and Title 13 applicable to the operation of vehicles in a pupil transportation program; Legal mandates, policies, regulations and guidelines of a pupil transportation and safety program; Safe driving practices and procedures; principles of supervision training and management, strategies of management, personnel practices; basic safety practices regarding equipment. Ability to: • Work confidentially, • See for purposes of reading printed matter and observing students, • Hear and understand speech at normal levels, • Communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation, • Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl, • Perform moderate physical exertion, • Lift 25 pounds; Carry 20 pounds, • Reach in all directions, • Apply interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy, • Plan, organize and coordinate a comprehensive pupil transportation program, • Oversee the planning of school bus routes and schedules, • Train and supervise staff and students, • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records and prepare clear and concise reports, • Understand and carryout oral and written directions, • Communicate effectively in oral and written form, • Establish and maintain cooperative organizational and community relationships, • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others including maintaining order on the school bus, • Operate a school bus and other transportation vehicles in a safe and proper manner using good judgment and extreme caution, • Maintain and verify accuracy and completeness of work requests, • Meet schedules and deadlines, • Plan and organize work, • Follow established guidelines, policies, procedures and law, • Maintain accurate records and make independent decisions within scope of authority, • Manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job. May include, but not limited to: • Maintains authority and responsibility in regard to district-wide transportation program., • Plan and determine school bus routes and schedules utilizing such factors as traffic conditions, pupil load size, potential road hazards and other factors., • Review, plan and coordinate changes in bus routes and schedules to obtain maximum utilization of equipment and personnel., • Plan, manage, direct and perform (when appropriate) maintenance of all Transportation Department vehicles., • Receive, investigate and resolve complaint issues of parents and staff concerning bus transportation., • Coordinate the purchase and inventory of supplies and materials for the Transportation Department., • Monitor and make recommendations, implement policies and procedures dealing with Transportation., • Must be familiar with and in compliance with legal requirements affecting school bus operation personnel issues, including Title 13: Authority of the driver; student conduct; student discipline and control; driver/student/parent relations; safety procedures; accident reporting, breakdown procedures., • Oversee the maintenance travel bus routes; evaluate and report view obstructions and road hazards to the appropriate agency, • Responsible for the assignment and scheduling of bus drivers to athletic and special study trips in coordination with the regular pupil transportation scheduling., • Prepare zone maps and discusses bus routing with the drivers, • Coordinate vacation and summer work schedules of Transportation personnel as necessary., • Provide complete and accurate information regarding the pupil transportation program as needed., • Plan, organize and conduct orientation and in-service training programs for Transportation personnel., • Confer with, counsels and advises transportation, school and administrative personnel concerning student behavior management problems, scheduling conflicts and the resolution of complaints or problems situations., • Conduct bus inspections and reports damage, vandalism and needed maintenance., • May provide service as a Bus Driver I as deemed necessary., • Conduct behind the wheel, classroom and in-service training as necessary for Bus Driver I employees including substitutes., • Maintain and monitor Bus Driver I training records., • Perform related duties as assigned. Experience / Education • High School diploma or GED required; Additional training in transportation systems, organization and supervision, or a closely related area desirable., • Five (5) years of experience as a school bus driver, including experiences of increasing responsibility within Transportation Department Conditions of Employment: • Possession of a Valid Class A or B, California Motor Vehicle Operator's License;, • Possession of a School Bus Driver's Certificate, issued by the California Highway Patrol;, • Possession of a current First Aid Certificate or CHP Certificate, • Possession of a State Department of Education Driver Instructor Requirements / Qualifications High School diploma or GED required; Additional training in transportation systems, organization and supervision, or a closely related area desirable. Five (5) years of experience as a school bus driver, including experiences of increasing responsibility within Transportation Department Valid Class A or B, California Motor Vehicle Operator's License; School Bus Drivers Certificated issued by California Highway Patrol, First Aid Certificate or CHP Certificate, State Department of Education Driver Instructor • Certificate Copy (Possession of State Department of Education Driver Instructor Certification), • Certification (Possession of School Bus Driver's Certificate, issued by CA Highway Patrol), • CPR/First Aid Certification (In-person, hands-on CPR/AED course approved by the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or another provider recognized by the California EMS Authority.
