What you'll do Role Description The Estimator is a full-time, on-site role based in Kansas City, MO. This position is responsible for reviewing project plans and specifications, performing quantity takeoffs, and preparing accurate cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractors. The estimator will solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes, analyze project risks, and collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other team members to refine budgets and proposals. Day-to-day activities include developing bid packages, tracking project costs against estimates, updating pricing databases, and contributing to value engineering efforts. The role also involves maintaining clear documentation, adhering to company standards, and supporting continuous improvement in estimating processes. What you'll do • Lead the full estimating process on assigned pursuits, from bid documents through submission, with little to no oversight, • Review drawings, specifications, and addenda to define scope, identify gaps, and flag risk before it's priced in, • Perform and supervise detailed quantity takeoffs for electrical systems — conduit and wire, switchgear, distribution, lighting, controls, fire alarm, and low-voltage, • Build detailed cost estimates in Accubid, including labor units, crew composition, productivity factors, material, and equipment, • Solicit, level, and analyze vendor and subcontractor quotes to close scope gaps and secure competitive pricing, • Produce conceptual, budget, design-development, and hard-bid estimates across design-build, design-bid-build, and CM-at-risk delivery, • Attend pre-bid meetings and site walks; prepare and respond to RFIs during the bid period, • Assemble complete bid packages and proposals for commercial, public, and federal solicitations, including all compliance documentation, • Make and defend bid/no-bid recommendations to the President/COO, • Turn the estimate over to project management with a clear basis of estimate, assumptions, and exclusions, • Support buyout, change order pricing, and value engineering through construction, • Conduct post-job cost reviews and maintain Alpha's historical cost database and unit pricing, • Ensure estimates account for NEC codes and all applicable federal, state, county, and city regulations, permits, and licensing costs Department leadership • Mentor and develop estimating staff; review their takeoffs and pricing, • Implement and maintain estimating processes, standards, and training programs, • Communicate regularly with direct reports on expectations, goals, and performance, including semi-annual reviews and ongoing feedback Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field — or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, • 10+ years in construction estimating, preferably in electrical contracting, • Proficiency in estimating and project management software: Accubid, Procore, BHS, and Microsoft Project, • Fluency reading electrical plans and specifications, with a proven track record of accurate, competitive estimates, • Demonstrated command of construction materials, equipment, means and methods, and current market pricing, • Track record establishing, maintaining, and managing construction budgets, • Demonstrated success working with the trade partner market and A/E teams, • Excellent knowledge of relevant rules, regulations, and quality standards, • Highly organized, able to manage multiple pursuits and deadlines simultaneously, • Excellent communication, negotiation, conflict-resolution, and mentoring skills, • PMP, CPE, or equivalent certification is a strong asset How you'll lead We're looking for someone who coaches rather than commands — who develops talent, delegates with clear expectations, drives better approaches, and builds a culture where people act with integrity and trust one another.
