Role Summary: The Principal Engineer, Homologation & Certification leads global regulatory compliance strategy, certification planning, and homologation execution for CARIAD's software-defined vehicle platforms. This role serves as a subject-matter expert, guiding teams through complex global regulatory landscapes, ensuring that all ECU hardware, software, and system integrations meet automotive compliance requirements for successful market launch. The Principal Engineer partners with engineering, safety, and VW Group homologation teams to embed compliance into product development, anticipate regulatory trends, mitigate certification risks, and maintain approval validity throughout the vehicle lifecycle, enabling CARIAD to deliver globally compliant and innovative mobility solutions. Role Responsibilities: Certification Execution & Technical Compliance • Lead and manage all regulatory testing activities, including EMC/EMI, RF compliance, environmental testing, safety, cybersecurity requirements (e.g., UNECE R155/R156), and software-update-related approval processes., • Coordinate testing at third-party labs and ensure technical documentation is complete and accurate., • Review and approve supplier test plans, compliance matrices, and technical design files., • Prepare or review type approval documentation packages, including technical descriptions, test reports, safety statements, and regulatory dossiers, • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and traceability of all certification deliverables before submission to authorities, • Ensure homologation deliverables are completed in accordance with CARIAD quality and process standards., • Manage interactions with technical services (e.g., TÜV, UTAC, KBA) during review cycles, test report validation, and corrective action follow-up., • Develop standardized documentation templates and best practices for certification across CARIAD programs., • Lead internal audits and pre-assessment reviews to confirm readiness for formal type approval., • Conduct ongoing monitoring of global regulatory changes and assess implications for in-market vehicles and future releases., • Support investigation and resolution of field issues related to compliance, safety, or regulatory deviations., • Ensure traceability and documentation of corrective actions to maintain certification validity across deployment lifecycle., • Oversee re-certification efforts triggered by product updates, new feature rollouts, or regulatory amendments., • Provide compliance insights for defect triage, early warning systems, and market incident reviews.Lead Global Homologation Strategy, • Develop and maintain a comprehensive homologation roadmap covering global markets like U.S., EU, China, and emerging market regulatory pathways, • Own the end-to-end homologation strategy for the Infotainment ECU and Connectivity ECU programs, • Identify applicable global regulatory standards (e.g., UNECE, FCC, CE, ISED, ANATEL, CCC, UKCA, KBA)., • Define certification entry criteria, readiness checkpoints, and approval gates., • Partner with VW Group homologation teams to align CARIAD product releases with Group-wide certification strategies, • Build and maintain the detailed homologation schedule aligned with the overall ECU launch plan., • Lead risk assessments and mitigation planning for regulatory gaps or late-cycle compliance findings., • Translate complex regulatory requirements into clear engineering specifications for system, software, and hardware teams, • Review product architecture and design proposals to ensure compliance considerations are integrated from concept phase onward., • Partner with hardware, software, and systems engineering teams to ensure designs meet regulatory requirements from concept through SOP, • Review and approve supplier test plans, compliance matrices, and technical design files., • Guide development teams through completion of required safety analyses, traceability matrices, and regulatory test readiness., • Identify certification-critical dependencies early in the engineering lifecycle to prevent late-stage redesign or revalidation needs., • Excellent cross-functional collaboration, • Strong communication and regulatory documentation skills, • Thoughtful Problem Solver & Communicator: Thinks analytically, critically & creatively and communicates with clarity, direction & purpose., • Attentive Listener: Listens actively while withholding judgment and advice. Demonstrates strong commitment and consideration for the larger interests of society, the environment, the company and the team., • Deep understanding of global vehicle regulations, • Expertise in certification planning and validation, • Strong embedded systems and vehicle systems experience, • Experience leading homologation for regulatory compliance, or certification for automotive ECUs or connectivity products, • Knowledge of global automotive regulatory frameworks, (e.g. wireless/FCC/CE, EMC, UNECE regulations), • Proven experience leading certification for complex infotainment, telematics, or connectivity systems, • Strong ability to interpret technical standards and guide engineering teams to compliance, • Demonstrated success creating certification strategies and executing them to meet launch deadlines, • Familiarity with manufacturing launch processes and supply chain interactions, • Familiarity with CARIAD/VW certification workflows, • Experience working with OEMs or Tier-1s developing infotainment systems, connectivity modules, or telematics control units 12+ years of experience in automotive regulatory compliance, certification engineering, functional safety, or homologation for global markets. Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field Desired Education: Master's degree; Certifications in Functional Safety or Regulatory Compliance. Work Flexibility: Occasional travel (10–20%), test witnessing, cross-time-zone collaboration. Compensation: Salary range is dependent on factors such as geographical differentials, credentials or certifications, industry-based experience, qualification and training. In the city of Mountain View, CA, the salary range for this position is $194,670 - $282,735. CARIAD, Inc. provides performance based merits and annual bonus along with a competitive benefits package.
