FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a highly skilled Senior In Vivo Surgical Specialist / Senior Surgical Research Associate with extensive hands-on experience performing surgical procedures in large animal models (Rabbit, pig, dog and NHP) to support preclinical research studies. This role is primarily responsible for the execution of complex in vivo surgical procedures and for supporting study operations in a CRO environment. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of ongoing surgical experience in large animal models, with strong expertise in large-animal vascular catheter cannulation, intrathecal catheterization, liver biopsy procedures, thoracotomy, and laparotomy. Experience working with non-human primates (NHP) is preferred but not required. This role is execution-focused and will work closely with study directors, veterinarians, and research staff to ensure surgical procedures are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements, including GLP where applicable. The selected candidate will be responsible for: • Surgical Procedures & Execution (40–50%), • Independently perform survival and non-survival surgical procedures in large animal models (e.g., porcine, canine, ovine)., • Perform specialized procedures including but not limited to:, • Cardiovascular catheterization and vascular access, • Hemodynamic monitoring procedures, • Renal injury and chronic kidney disease models, • Liver biopsy and kidney biopsy procedures, • Intrathecal lumbar puncture for CNS drug delivery or CSF collection, • Assist with anesthesia induction, monitoring, and perioperative management., • Ensure proper post-operative monitoring and recovery procedures., • Maintain high standards of surgical technique, sterility, and animal welfare., • Surgical Preparation & Post-Procedure Care (15–20%), • Prepare surgical suites prior to procedures, including equipment setup and instrument preparation., • Assist with animal preparation, anesthesia support, and surgical positioning., • Monitor animals during recovery and support post-operative care as needed., • Coordinate surgical room turnover, equipment cleaning, and procedure room reset following surgeries., • Maintain readiness of surgical equipment and supplies., • Study Support & Data Documentation (15–20%), • Assist with physiological data collection and monitoring during studies., • Support compilation and organization of surgical data and study records., • Assist with data review and basic analysis related to surgical procedures., • Maintain accurate and detailed procedural documentation in compliance with study protocols and GLP standards when applicable., • Support preparation and maintenance of study-related records and raw data., • Surgical Suite Operations & Equipment Management (10–15%), • Support operational readiness of surgical facilities and procedure rooms., • Maintain surgical instrument inventory and coordinate sterilization processes., • Ensure anesthesia and monitoring equipment are properly maintained and functional., • Track and manage surgical supplies and consumables., • Coordinate maintenance and calibration of surgical and monitoring equipment., • SOP Development, Training & Process Improvement (5–10%), • Assist in maintaining and updating surgical SOPs and procedural documentation., • Support development of standardized surgical procedures and best practices., • Train and mentor junior technical staff in surgical techniques, sterile procedures, and animal handling., • Education, • BS or MS in Veterinary Technology, Biomedical Sciences, Animal Science, Physiology, or a related field., • Equivalent combination of education and relevant hands-on experience may be considered., • Experience, • Minimum 5 years of hands-on surgical experience in large animal in vivo research models., • Demonstrated experience performing complex surgical procedures independently., • Experience with procedures related to:, • Large-animal vascular catheter cannulation, • Intrathecal catheterization procedures, • Liver biopsy, • Thoracotomy, laparotomy, • Experience working in CRO or pre-clinical research environments is preferred., • Experience working with non-human primates (NHP) is desirable but not required., • Familiarity with GLP study conduct and documentation requirements is preferred., • Technical Skills, • Surgical instrumentation and sterile technique, • Large animal anesthesia monitoring and perioperative care, • Hemodynamic monitoring systems, • Biological sample collection and handling, • Data entry and procedural documentation, • Understanding of GLP and regulatory compliance requirements Salary Range: $ 80-115k/year For immediate and confidential consideration, please email your resume to and call 858.427.3668.
