Job Description Location: Fully remote, or hybrid in San Jose (if preferred) Employment Type: Full Time Estimated Duration: 6-9 month evaluation period, potentially continuing to permanent thereafter. About the Role: We are seeking a highly skilled Civil Engineer with proven project leadership experience to join our capital delivery team supporting a major water utility. This role is ideal for an engineering professional who combines hands-on civil design expertise with the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and guide projects from concept to completion. Youll be directly involved in designing water infrastructure while also coordinating with stakeholders, resolving project challenges, and ensuring technical quality and timely delivery. Typical projects include control valves, storage tanks, pump stations, pressure tanks, pipelines, and water treatment plants. These may involve new installations or modifications to existing facilities. This position offers a balance between technical contribution and project oversight in a collaborative environment. The goal is to have someone who can quickly come up to speed on water utility stakeholder processes and be effective in completing project management and design tasks. Why Join Us? Key Responsibilities: • Civil Design & Technical Work, • Perform and review civil engineering design for water utility projects., • Design work will encompass projects such as wells, storage tanks, pump stations, pressure tanks, pipelines, and water treatment plants., • Ensure compliance with CPUC, DDW, municipal standards, and permitting requirements., • Provide technical input and design solutions during all phases of the project lifecycle., • Project Leadership & Coordination, • Lead project teams across civil, mechanical, and electrical disciplines., • Serve as a primary technical contact for project stakeholders., • Guide permitting processes to minimize delays and streamline approvals., • Monitor scope, schedule, budget, and risks, ensuring alignment with project objectives., • Oversee consultant work and ensure change orders and invoices are processed in a timely manner., • Stakeholder Engagement, • Facilitate project meetings with utility staff, contractors, and consultants., • Foster collaboration and problem-solving across diverse teams., • Prepare and deliver progress reports to leadership and clients. Work Model and On-Site Requirements: • This role is primarily remote, with an option to work hybrid at the San Jose office if desired., • Travel is limited, estimated at 0% to 5% of the time., • Occasional travel to the San Jose office., • 9/80 work schedule, every other Friday off. What We Are Looking For: • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline., • 610 years of direct engineering and engineering management experience in water utility or public infrastructure environments. Strong design experience in drinking water system (piping, station rebuilds, booster stations, etcetera), • Working understanding of other engineering disciplines and project lifecycle integration., • Strong background in project delivery and stakeholder engagement., • Proven track record of leading initiatives through to completion., • Experience working on drinking water projects, and working with or for public agencies/utilities in California., • Strong communication skills. High emotional intelligence and ability to influence various stakeholders., • Working knowledge of permitting processes, CPUC/DDW/municipal standards, and capital delivery procedures. Preferred Attributes: • Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT certification., • PMP or equivalent project management certification., • Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Power BI, or Primavera., • Experience with Design-Bid-Build or alternative delivery methods., • Understanding of ESG, CPUC compliance, and infrastructure resilience goals.
