POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Corporate Safety Director is the designated safety officer for SIHF Healthcare. The position will ensure that all employees comply with health and safety laws. The position is responsible for establishing policies that will create and maintain a safe workplace. In addition, this position will also provide safety services to Touchette Regional Hospital under a shared service agreement. The Corporate Safety Director will have excellent attention to detail to identify hazards. The position will also be able to discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety programs. The ability to communicate guidelines to a multidisciplinary workforce is essential. The goal is to ensure the workplace meets all legal expectations and actively supports occupational health and safety. This position will manage the organization’s clinical OSHA regulations and requirements and facilitate OSHA Regulatory Training. The position will also be responsible for Emergency Management, Environment of Care and all Life Safety programs in the organization. The position will be primarily responsible for injury prevention and post-accident investigations, as well as overseeing the workers’ compensation program, including serving as the main point of contact for our group captive claims adjusters. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines., 2. Ensure that all Joint Commission guidelines for the Physical Environment of Care standards remain compliant. Coordinate the on-going, organization-wide system of information collection and evaluation in order to identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement relative to the Joint Commission Environment of Care (EC) standards., 3. Facilitate the safety committee meetings. Participate in hospital committees as required. This includes community involvement regarding emergency preparedness and serve as consultant to other departments., 4. Review and update policies regarding Life Safety, Emergency Management, Fire Safety and Environment of Care., 5. Participate in performance improvement and information management activities. Coordinate a multi-disciplinary team to conduct ongoing safety tours of clinical and non-clinical areas., 6. Assist in the enforcement of interim life safety plans. 7.Oversee all on-site inspections, assisting inspectors and surveyors in the performance of their duties; provide reports as required in follow-up to surveys, inspections and audits. 8. Ensure safety and facility quality control is in compliance with local, federal, state regulations and provide consultations. This includes coordination with the Corporate Facilities Director., 9. Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety., 10. Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law., 11. Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention., 12. Monitor compliance to policies and laws by observing employees and operations., 13. Inspect equipment to observe possible unsafe conditions., 14. Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes. Perform root cause analyses as appropriate., 15. Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures., 16. Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics. 17.Ensure OSHA compliance is enforced throughout the organization, including OSHA training. 18. May access protected health information (PHI) in accordance with departmental assignments and guidelines defining levels of access (i.e. incidental v. extensive)., 19. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: 1. Deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines. 2.Must have an understanding of National Fire Protection Association code compliance. Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local regulations pertaining to safety and fire safety. 3. Ability to produce reports and develop relevant policies., 4. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Joint Commission Environment of Care safety and life safety standards and requirements., 5. Thorough knowledge of accreditation standards, health care regulations, performance improvement, and patient safety issues., 6. Good knowledge of the operation of a hospital and health care facility and the variety of equipment used., 7. Ability to identify and evaluate hazard and risks and make effective recommendations for action and correction., 8. Strong knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment., 9. Understanding of The Joint Commission/Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Illinois Department of Public Health methodology, 10. Excellent organizational and motivational skills., 11. Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability., 12. Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities., 13. Ability to develop needs assessment and to prepare a sound written plan based on needs analysis of the assessments., 14. Proficient personal computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, routine database, recording keeping, electronic mail, etc., 15. The ability to analyze issues and solve them creatively., 16. Must be professional in appearance and demeanor., 17. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be a team player. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 1. An Associate’s degree is required., 2. A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Safety Management or a relevant field is preferred., 3. A 30-hour OSHA card is required., 4. A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in safety management is required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: May be required to do extensive walking to inspect facilities. Should be able to lift up to 25 pounds. May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time. WORK SCHEDULE: Normal work hours for this position are Monday through Friday dayshift unless otherwise specified.
