Job Description Job Title: 3rd Shift CNC Lead Job Description The 3rd Shift CNC Lead oversees CNC machining operations on the night shift, ensuring high-quality production, efficient workflows, and a safe working environment. This role combines advanced CNC setup and operation with hands-on leadership, guiding machinists, coordinating with cross-functional teams, and resolving technical issues to meet production and quality goals. Responsibilities • Perform complex setups on CNC mills and lathes, including selecting and installing tooling and fixtures, setting offsets, and validating first-article parts to ensure they meet specifications., • Operate CNC equipment to produce precision components to print, monitoring tool wear, adjusting offsets, and maintaining consistent output and cycle times., • Lead and supervise the 3rd shift machining team by assigning tasks, providing direction, and supporting production targets across all CNC machines., • Inspect machined parts using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, and other precision measurement tools to verify adherence to dimensional tolerances and GD&T requirements., • Interpret engineering blueprints and technical drawings accurately to set up machines and verify part conformity., • Identify, diagnose, and resolve machining issues such as dimensional drift, chatter, tool failure, and fixture instability to minimize downtime and scrap., • Train and mentor machinists on proper CNC setup, safe machine operation, and best machining practices, including documentation of procedures and training materials., • Coordinate workflow with supervisors, engineers, and quality teams to maintain smooth production flow and meet delivery schedules., • Oversee routine machine checks and basic preventive maintenance, and coordinate repairs or service needs with maintenance personnel or external service providers., • Enforce safety standards by maintaining a clean, organized work area and promoting safe work practices throughout the shift., • Support continuous improvement initiatives in machining processes, tooling, and programming to enhance productivity and quality., • Provide leadership coverage across shifts as needed to ensure consistent communication and handoff between teams. Essential Skills • Strong experience setting up and operating CNC mills and CNC lathes, including complex multi-step setups., • Proficiency in blueprint reading and blueprint interpretation for precision machining applications., • Hands-on machining experience with mills and lathes, including both CNC and manual lathe operations., • Demonstrated supervisory or lead experience in a machining or manufacturing environment, with the ability to direct and support a team., • Ability to perform precise quality inspections using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, and other precision measurement tools., • Working knowledge of GD&T and its application to part inspection and machining processes., • Experience with CNC programming and editing, including G-code and programming CNC machines., • Familiarity with Haas, Okuma, and Fanuc CNC controls and related machine platforms., • Competence in troubleshooting machining issues such as dimensional deviations, chatter, tool wear, and fixture problems., • Strong communication skills to work effectively with machinists, supervisors, engineers, and quality personnel., • Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment on the production floor. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience using Mastercam or similar CAM software for CNC programming and toolpath generation., • Exposure to SolidWorks or comparable CAD software for reviewing models and drawings., • Experience in vertical milling and vertical CNC mill setup and operation., • Ability to create and maintain training documentation and standard work instructions for machining processes., • Previous experience in a supervisor or lead CNC operator role on any shift., • Strong organizational skills for coordinating workflow and managing multiple jobs and priorities., • Continuous improvement mindset with an interest in optimizing setups, cycle times, and tooling strategies. Work Environment This role is based in a manufacturing facility on 3rd shift, working with CNC mills, CNC lathes, and related machining equipment such as Haas, Okuma, and Fanuc-controlled machines. The environment is production-focused, with close collaboration between machining, engineering, and quality teams to keep workflow moving smoothly. You regularly use precision measurement tools and computer-based systems such as Mastercam and SolidWorks to support programming and setup activities. The workspace is organized and safety-oriented, with an emphasis on cleanliness and proper handling of tools and materials. Typical attire is appropriate shop-floor clothing suitable for a machining environment, including any required personal protective equipment provided according to facility standards.E Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Eagan, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
