Job Description Summary The Head Athletic Trainer & Sports Medicine Coordinator is a student-centered leadership role responsible for overseeing the health, safety, and performance of Franklin Road Academy's Middle School and Upper School student-athletes. This position leads the development and execution of a comprehensive sports medicine program that prioritizes an education-based athletics environment that promotes wellness, injury prevention, and transformational growth through a competitive athletic experience. Serving as the primary healthcare provider for student-athletes, this role maintains an active presence across FRA's athletic facilities, including the Weicker Center and outdoor venues. The Head Athletic Trainer supervises an assistant athletic trainer and partners closely with the Director of Athletics, Campus Health Services Administrator, team physicians, and external healthcare providers to ensure coordinated, high-quality care. Essential Functions The tasks, duties, and responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to: Program Leadership & Administration • Lead and manage FRA's comprehensive sports medicine program across all Middle School and Upper School athletics, • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant athletic training staff, • Establish and maintain policies, procedures, and best practices aligned with TSSAA and NFHS standards, • Develop and maintain relationships with team physicians, physical therapists, and external healthcare providers, • Oversee athletic training facilities, equipment, and budget needs Student-Athlete Care & Injury Management • Provide prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for Middle School and Upper School student-athletes, • Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation and injury reports, • Provide athletic training coverage for assigned practices and home athletic contests, with occasional coverage for away events as needed, • Ensure emergency action plans are in place and executed when necessary, • Communicate clearly and proactively with coaches, student-athletes, parents, and school administration regarding injuries, recovery timelines, and return-to-play protocols, • Partner with the director of strength and conditioning and our coaches to promote safe training practices and injury prevention strategies, • Monitor and manage concussion protocols in alignment with TSSAA and best practices, • Oversee hydration, heat acclimatization, and environmental safety procedures, • Provide educational programming for student-athletes on injury prevention, nutrition, and overall wellness, • Assist in the development of initiatives that enhance the student-athlete experience, • Support FRA's mission of promoting leadership, integrity, and personal growth, • Teach one class or serve as an advisor, as needed Qualifications Education/Experience • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Athletic Training or related field, • BOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), • Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Tennessee, • CPR/AED certification required, • Instructor certification to teach First Aid, CPR, and AED courses preferred, • Minimum of five years of experience in a secondary school or collegiate setting preferred, • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, • Commitment to education-based athletics and whole-child development, • Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students, families, and colleagues, • Proactive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented mindset This position operates in both indoor and outdoor athletic environments and requires regular standing, walking, and occasional running. Responsibilities may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and require lifting, carrying, or assisting individuals weighing up to 50 pounds.
