Great British Energy will be a publicly owned, operationally independent energy company, designed to drive clean energy deployment, boost energy independence, create jobs and ensure UK taxpayers, billpayers and communities reap the benefits of clean, secure, homegrown energy. Setting up Great British Energy is one of government's first steps for change and we will do this in a way that means it will have both an early impact and long-term success. Through its five functions (Project development, Project investment and ownership, Local Power Plan, Supply chains and working with Great British Nuclear), Great British Energy will speed up the deployment of mature and new technologies, as well as local energy projects, to support the government's aim of decarbonising our electricity system by 2030 whilst also ensuring we can meet future demand as we further decarbonise the economy. To this end and as an example of what it can achieve, we have already agreed a major partnership between Great British Energy and The Crown Estate to accelerate deployment and support UK supply chains. Great British Energy will work collaboratively with industry, local authorities and communities, and other public sector organisations such as the National Wealth Fund, to spread skilled jobs and investment across the country. Great British Energy will be backed by a capitalisation of £8.3 billion of new money over this Parliament. In recognition of Scotland's leading role in the UK's clean energy revolution, Great British Energy will be headquartered and run from Aberdeen. Description: The role and our team Currently in its set-up phase, we're offering an exciting opportunity to join Great British Energy as a Financial Controller on a 6-month fixed-term basis. This is a critical role where you'll be responsible for designing and developing GBE's financial strategies, policies and processes. You'll ensure robust financial controls are in place, oversee safe and effective financial operations, and lead the production of our Annual Report and Accounts to the highest standards. As Financial Accountant, you will: • Develop GBE's financial policies and procedures, championing strong financial governance across the organisation, • Support production of GBE's Annual Report and Accounts and act the main point of contact for our external auditors., • Set accounting policies integral to the company, and work with our Sponsor Department (DESNZ) and HM Treasury to ensure financial transactions and investments are appropriately recorded., • Support production of GBE's Annual Report and Accounts and act the main point of contact for our external auditors., • Develop GBE's Cash Management policy and manage the GBE bank account, ensuring that cash payments and receipts are accurately recorded in the financial ledger, and that appropriate cash sums are made available to the company each month., • Develop GBE's tax policies to ensure appropriate VAT and corporation tax returns are made., • Set accounting policies for the company, and work with our Sponsor Department (DESNZ) and HM Treasury to ensure financial transactions and investments are appropriately recorded., • Be responsible for the accuracy of the GBE's Statement of Financial Position (SoFP / Balance Sheet) through in-depth knowledge of its assets and liabilities, ensuring robust processes are in place to provide assurance to the Accounting Office., • Development of counter-fraud strategies and supporting action plans., • Develop/enhance financial policies, procedures and guidance for use across the company., • Contribute to the provision of finance advice and guidance across the company (e.g. in relation to non-current assets, travel and expenses, VAT or government finance policies)., • Experience and knowledge of central government accounting, • Experience and knowledge of FReM, • Experience of dealing with auditors, • Evidence of implementing financial controls and processes - balance sheet and reconciliations etc, • Experience of using Microsoft Office especially Excel to intermediate level, • Evidence of knowledge of UK tax requirements, • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
