Job Description Location: Mokupapapa Discovery Center, Hilo, HI (or Honolulu) Supervisor: PIR Communications & Engagement Manager Location: Full-time, Exempt, 18 month term position, no direct reports What We Need The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking an Outreach and Education Coordinator, a position responsible for the development, coordination, and evaluation of projects and activities to meet the outreach, communications, media, and marketing goals of the sanctuary system. Working closely with the Communications & Engagement Manager, the incumbent will serve as an outreach specialist, coordinating and developing partnerships with stakeholders and constituents, including, but not limited to, boating, fishing, diving, paddling, birding, and heritage program, to ensure accurate and effective outreach and communication of the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) policies and initiatives. What You’ll Do • Inform and educate teachers, students, communities, stakeholders, and visitors effectively, appropriately and strategically about the National Marine Sanctuaries system and the Pacific Islands Region;, • Develop, update, and compile curriculum, presentations, and educational resources used in lessons and activities about the National Marine Sanctuaries system and the Pacific Islands Region; ensure that education materials are aligned with the State of Hawaii and national education standards;, • Develop, integrate, and promote new materials and tools, which may include online tools for collaboration, interactive mobile device apps and video tools to support educational programming as needed;, • Design, promote, and lead teacher and student workshops;, • Work with local universities and organizations, teacher training institutes, and communities to arrange workshops and use of the PIOEC venue, as well as with voyaging canoe communities and outdoor environmental programs to arrange meaningful experiences for education and outreach program participants;, • Coordinate education and outreach events on behalf of the Pacific Islands Region;, • Communicate and collaborate with a network of educators and partners (NOAA, USFWS, State of Hawaii, OHA, Kamehameha Schools, Bishop Museum, Waikiki Aquarium, PVS, UH, and others) on behalf of Pacific Islands Region;, • Manage and update education and outreach contact lists;, • Coordinate cultural enrichment programs across the region;, • Participate in the development, planning, and execution of education programs as part of the regional education team;, • Support Papahānaumokuākea and HIHWNMS Advisory Council meetings as needed; and, • With a spirit of flexibility and mutual team respect, undertake tasks as needed and assigned for overall team success. Who You Are Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Education, Teaching, Hawaiian or Samoan Studies, or related field;, • Three to five (3-5) years of experience in formal or informal education;, • Experience in conducting workshops, evaluating education programs, and working in communities with diverse cultural and/or socioeconomic backgrounds;, • Experience in developing curricula;, • Knowledge of natural history of the Pacific Islands Region, including the Hawaiian Islands, American Samoa, and the Pacific Remote Islands;, • The ability to deliver high-quality products and services to both external and internal clients and partners, in accordance with agreed-upon time schedules;, • The ability to work collaboratively with a team and independently;, • Experience with desktop editing and layout software is a must. Experience with video production equipment and editing software is desired;, • The ability to work evenings and weekends, and travel both in and out of Hawaiʻi for training and other programmatic needs;, • Able to travel on small ocean craft;, • Familiarity working with the government and non-government organizations; and,, • Master’s in Education or related field; and,, • A sincere interest in, and commitment to, the mission of the National Marine Sanctuary System.
