Job Description HVAC Journeyman Position Summary Under the direction of the HVAC Foreman, the HVAC Journeyman is responsible for the installation, maintenance, commissioning, and repair of commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems. This role requires advanced mechanical aptitude, the ability to work independently from blueprints and specifications, and a strong understanding of HVAC codes, safety standards, and system performance requirements. The Journeyman ensures all work complies with manufacturer requirements, building codes, and project schedules. Key ResponsibilitiesSystem Installation & Commissioning • Install, assemble, and connect commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems, including air handlers, rooftop units, boilers, chillers, compressors, fans, pumps, ductwork, piping, valves, and controls., • Perform complete system start-ups, commissioning, and operational testing to verify proper performance, efficiency, and code compliance., • Set up and balance airflow, temperature control systems, and refrigerant circuits according to design specifications.Blueprint & Specification Interpretation, • Read, interpret, and execute work based on blueprints, schematics, shop drawings, and project specifications., • Lay out equipment, ductwork, piping, and supply networks accurately to ensure proper fit and function., • Coordinate installation sequencing with other trades to maintain workflow and project schedules.Troubleshooting & Repair, • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control system faults using test instruments and technical documentation., • Identify root causes and perform corrective repairs or component replacements., • Adjust and recalibrate systems to restore proper operation and efficiency.Preventative Maintenance, • Perform scheduled maintenance including inspections, cleaning, lubrication, filter changes, refrigerant checks, and wear assessments., • Identify potential system issues and recommend corrective actions to extend equipment life and prevent failures.Compliance & Documentation, • Ensure all work adheres to local and national building codes, manufacturer standards, and OSHA safety requirements., • Maintain accurate documentation including service reports, work logs, test results, materials used, and maintenance records.Leadership & Mentorship, • Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to apprentices and less experienced technicians, as applicable., • Promote quality workmanship, safety awareness, and adherence to company standards.Required Qualifications, • Active HVAC Journeyman License, • Proven commercial HVAC installation and service experience, • Advanced mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving skills, • Ability to independently read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications, • Proficiency with HVAC tools, testing instruments, and diagnostic equipment, • Strong construction and installation experience across HVAC systems, • Valid driver’s license, • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in active construction environmentsPreferred Qualifications, • Experience with plumbing integration on HVAC systems, • OSHA 10 certification, • Experience with boilers, chillers, hydronic systems, and heat pumps, • Familiarity with institutional, industrial, or large-scale commercial projectsWork Environment & Physical Requirements, • Work performed on active construction sites, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and confined spaces, • Frequent lifting, carrying, climbing, bending, and kneeling, • Ability to work in varied conditions, including heat, cold, and elevated areas, • Must safely transport and manage tools, materials, and equipment throughout the workdayWhy Work With Us, • Strong pipeline of work — high demand and stability, • Clear advancement opportunities into foreman and leadership roles, • Tuition reimbursement and ongoing technical development, • Excellent work/life balance with project variety, • 401(k) with company match, • Comprehensive benefits: health, dental, vision, FSA (including dependent care), • Life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
