Job Summary The Senior Aviation Underwriter will play a foundational role in launching and scaling TMH’s UAS (drone) insurance platform. This role is responsible for driving underwriting strategy, distribution development, and portfolio performance across targeted commercial and enterprise segments, with clear ownership of growth, profitability, and portfolio composition. The individual will translate underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and market insights into disciplined underwriting practices, scalable product design, and executable guidelines. Working cross-functionally with product, operations, claims, compliance, and technology teams, this role will lead the development and refinement of coverage structures, underwriting frameworks, and go-to-market execution. A key focus will be building and expanding broker and distribution partnerships to achieve production targets and accelerate market penetration. As the platform matures, the role will also oversee digital and algorithmic underwriting performance, leveraging data and automation to optimize risk selection, pricing accuracy, and operational efficiency in alignment with the organization’s broader aviation strategy. The ideal candidate will be located near our offices in Frisco, TX or Chicago, IL. Key Responsibilities • Develop and execute broker and partner distribution strategies, with a focus on enterprise fleets and specialty aviation risks to drive production and market penetration, • Define and refine target segments, including utilities, infrastructure, energy, and commercial fleet operators, to optimize portfolio mix and premium growth, • Own underwriting performance across assigned segments, including growth, profitability, pricing adequacy, and portfolio composition, • Translate underwriting strategy and risk appetite into disciplined underwriting guidelines, coverage structures, and scalable product frameworks, • Contribute to pricing strategy, including usage-based and exposure-driven rating approaches, in partnership with actuarial and aviation leadership, • Oversee digital underwriting execution, ensuring alignment with guidelines, authority, and portfolio objectives while optimizing throughput and efficiency, • Monitor portfolio performance and emerging risk trends, including loss experience, retention, and evolving aviation and UAS exposures, and recommend adjustments to strategy and appetite, • Lead ongoing product refinement, including updates to forms, coverage, and underwriting guidelines based on market feedback and performance insights, • Partner cross-functionally with product, operations, claims, compliance, and technology teams to ensure alignment between underwriting intent, execution, and customer experience, • Collaborate with operations and technology to enhance onboarding, policy issuance, and digital platform capabilities, • Engage with claims to ensure underwriting assumptions and coverage intent are reflected in claims outcomes and feedback loops inform underwriting improvements, • Maintain deep awareness of aviation regulations, UAS operating standards, and technological advancements to inform underwriting strategy and product evolution Experience and Skills • 10+ years of underwriting experience within aviation, aerospace, or other specialty lines; exposure to UAS or emerging risks preferred, • Strong understanding of aviation risk fundamentals, coverage structures, and underwriting principles across commercial and enterprise risks, • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain broker relationships within aviation or specialty lines to support production and distribution objectives, • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret portfolio data, loss trends, and market dynamics to inform underwriting and pricing decisions, • Experience building or scaling a specialty insurance product or program is preferred, • Familiarity with digital underwriting platforms, APIs, or embedded insurance models, with an understanding of data-driven or usage-based underwriting approaches is preferred, • Strong cross-functional instincts and experience partnering across claims, legal, compliance, operations, and technology partners, • Clear and professional communication skills, with the ability to articulate underwriting decisions and risk considerations effectively, • Organized and detail‑oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, evolving environment Education • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required, • Active P&C insurance license(s), • Professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM, or equivalent) preferred About Tokio Marine Highland Tokio Marine Highland Insurance Services (TMH) is a leading property and casualty underwriting agency.
