Job Description JOB DESCRIPTION Classification Title Director of Marketing and Communications Job Code FLSA Status Exempt Salary Grade 7 Reports To COO/COS Date July, 28th 2025 GENERAL SUMMARY The Director of Marketing and Communications is directly responsible for the Authority’s marketing, informational, advertising, promotional, customer outreach, media/public relations programs and overall brand identity. We are seeking a dynamic, hands-on Director of Marketing and Communication to lead our brand strategy, drive integrated marketing efforts, and manage all aspects of internal and external communications. This role is ideal for a strategic thinker who thrives in execution—someone who can craft compelling narratives, build campaigns from the ground up, and measure impact across channels ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES • Building the KCATA Brand, • Working closely with the Executive Team, • Develop and implement short and long-term plans designed to increase RideKC awareness, ridership, revenue and support employee engagement. This includes regional communications, media engagement and promotion with regional RideKC partners., • Marketing - includes route-specific promotions, direct mail, print and electronic media advertising, public service announcements, signage, brochures, sales packets, etc., • Communications Outreach – goal to increase media and social media exposure and stakeholder engagement., • Communications Internal – goal to increase employee awareness and engagement. Responsible for the development, content, preparation, and distribution of the KCATA’s internal and external newsletters, monitors, signage, etc., • Advertising – oversee, develop, grow and track transit advertising; develop regional advertising and naming rights program; develop, research and implement new fare mechanisms and special programs. Includes contract planning and negotiations., • Responsible for the production and distribution of public timetables, including design, art, printing, inventory control, and servicing of schedule racks throughout the metropolitan area., • Responsible for all elements of public information including onboard and wayside information (print and digital), all passenger bulletins and updates, passenger newsletters, and other materials. This also includes working with Transportation and RideKC partners to ensure urgent service alerts are delivered to customers in a timely and easy-to-digest manner across multiple channels (SMS, social media, kiosks, etc.)., • Stay abreast of industry and environmental news, trends, etc., • Draft letters, proposals, policies, procedures, manuals, etc. upon request from other departments, ensuring all materials comply with RideKC branding guidelines., • Assist in the development and execution of marketing plans and special events., • Contribute to the development of RideKC and KCATA publications, brochures and other literature as assigned., • Represent RideKC to other departments and outside agencies such as school programs, special events, and other community outreach activities, as requested., • Proofread artwork and other marketing and communications materials., • Collaborate with the Procurement department to develop Requests for Proposals or other solicitations for goods and services in support of marketing and communications activities. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES • Work requires managing and monitoring work performance by directing multiple groups of employees across more than one business function within an organization unit, including making final decisions on program and agency delivery and implementation, as needed. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY • Position has limited fiscal responsibility. May assist in the collection of data in support of recommendations for departmental budget allocations. May monitor division or program/promotional level budget and expenditures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Required Education and Experience • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Marketing, Communications, Public Administration, Journalism, Graphic Design or a related field., • At least three (3) to five (5) years of successful related work experience in advertising, marketing, public outreach, or a related field., • Preferred at least three (3) years of department supervision experience; a demonstrated ability lead and motivate project teams., • Experience in various transit operating capacities is desirable., • This position will be required to lead a collaborative marketing and communications effort with RideKC partners. The ability to inspire, support, and communicate effectively with all partners agencies is a must. Partner agencies may be asked to meet and potentially interview final candidates., • None COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES Knowledge of: • Knowledge of RideKC operations, administration, programs, and policies is required., • Knowledgeable in public relations techniques specifically public agencies and interaction with vulnerable populations, • Principles, practices and operations of marketing and promotion program development and administration; Methods and techniques of advertising, marketing, and media planning, • Branding applications and marketing strategies, • Principles and practices of contract administration, • Methods and techniques of market research, survey research, analysis and program development, • Methods and techniques of audio, video, and print production, • Principles and practices of bookkeeping, budget preparation and administration, • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation, • Related Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations Skill in: • High level of customer service., • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work to meet deadlines are essential., • Must be able to effectively facilitate multiple projects simultaneously., • Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must, with effective grammar, spelling, and punctuation., • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships., • Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios, • Must have advanced computer skills with experience in all Microsoft Office products and other specialized computer programs, • Designing and using computerized databases Ability to: • Manage a comprehensive marketing, research, service evaluation, and advertising program, • Lead and motivate cross-functional teams to drive collaborative action and bring initiatives to a successful conclusion., • Team player with a proven ability to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of an organization including senior management., • Meet schedules and deadlines of the work, • Understand, carry out and delegate oral and written directions, • Accurately organize and maintain documents, work product and electronic files, • Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries, • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, • Coordinate complex tasks and schedules, • Develop and administer departmental goals, objectives, and procedures, • Analyze and assess operational needs and make appropriate adjustments POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK • May work in a normal office environment and/or remote office as approved. Will sometimes be required to work and/or attend meetings or events in public and at all RideKC locations., • Monday through Friday 8am until 5pm, • Due to the unique nature of the job requirements, occasional abnormal hours are expected and required. TRAVEL Travel within the regional area is required; occasional travel outside of the region may be required. WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS • This position is relative free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards and is generally sedentary. Incumbents may be required to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
