Job Description Rural Mutual Insurance Company is looking for an experienced Casualty Claims Specialist to join our growing team and play a key role in delivering fair, timely, and high‑quality claim resolutions. This remote position is open to Wisconsin residents who are ready to manage a diverse caseload of moderate‑to‑complex liability and casualty claims. Compensation: $70,000 - $90,000 yearly Responsibilities: • Investigate and analyze casualty claims to determine liability, damages, and coverage applicability by gathering statements, evidence, medical records, police reports, and other relevant materials., • Evaluate and negotiate case settlements within assigned authority, ensuring outcomes are equitable, defensible, and in accordance with policy terms and legal guidance., • Prepare and issue coverage determinations, including Reservation of Rights and coverage position letters, when appropriate., • Supervise outside counsel in the defense of insureds in liability claim lawsuits, including strategy discussions, litigation oversight, and cost management., • Work with outside counsel and internal legal partners to develop defense strategy, discovery plans, and trial preparation as needed., • Independently establish and adjust claims with reserves of up to $50,000 and adjust claims with higher reserves with guidance from management., • Participate in claim review committee meetings, mediations, arbitrations, depositions, and jury trials when required., • Document and maintain claim files with accurate notes, correspondence, investigative records, reserve analysis, and settlement rationale., • Monitor and interpret applicable statutes, case law, and regulatory requirements, applying legal precedent to claim handling decisions., • Provide timely and professional communication to insureds, claimants, agents, and partners., • Collaborate with underwriting, risk management, and other business partners to support risk mitigation and policyholder retention., • Maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements., • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals. Qualifications: • Minimum of three years of casualty claim adjusting experience, including liability claim investigations, negotiations, and litigation support., • Prior experience in insurance defense, complex liability evaluation, or coordinating outside counsel strongly preferred., • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Risk Management & Insurance, Legal Studies, or related field preferred; equivalent work experience considered., • Ability to read, interpret, and apply case law, statutes, and legal precedent to claim decisions., • Skilled in reserve setting and loss projection, with an analytical approach to claim exposure., • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly., • Build trust through honesty, integrity, and professionalism., • Holds self and others accountable for commitments and quality outcomes., • Approaches challenges with initiative, urgency, and sound judgment., • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to deliver responsive solutions., • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills., • Proficiency with personal computers and claims management systems., • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing to team objectives., • Comfortable managing multiple claims and deadlines in a dynamic environment., • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance., • Valid Driver’s License required; travel to court, depositions, mediations, or other claim-related events may be required.
