Part of Wealthy & Mid-sized Business Compliance (WMBC), it's our job to ensure that wealthy individuals pay the right amount of tax at the right time - by providing appropriate support to get things right as well as tackling non-compliance when it arises. The definition of 'wealthy' is an individual with £200,000 of annual income and/or £2 million of assets (e.g. property and investments). Wealthy individuals often have complex tax affairs that present significant challenges to an effective tax administration. Given the size and nature of the tax at risk within the wealthy population, there is increased opportunity for, and risk of, non-compliance. For our most complex customers we adopt a co-operative compliance approach where there is a more intensive and enduring relationship with the individual and their agents. While the internal title is Technical Customer Compliance Manager, this role is fundamentally a Tax Compliance Manager position, focused on ensuring that high-net-worth individuals meet their tax obligations in line with HMRC standards. Customer Compliance Managers lead our approach to compliance for our highest risk customers, using their tax professional knowledge to identify and address complex risks across tax regimes. They build effective working relationships with customers and their agents, as well as take the lead in conducting investigations and providing direction to colleagues on investigation cases. As a Direct Tax Specialist, you will be dealing with some of the most high profile and complex personal tax matters that present themselves within the UK tax system. Job description You will lead HMRC's compliance strategy for a portfolio of high-risk wealthy individuals-those with annual income over £200,000 and/or assets exceeding £2 million. You'll apply your tax expertise to identify and address complex risks across personal tax regimes, build strong relationships with customers and their agents, and lead investigations into suspected non-compliance. This is a technical, strategic role requiring deep tax knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across HMRC. You will: • Lead HMRC's compliance approach for a portfolio of wealthy individuals., • Build and maintain effective relationships with customers and their agents to promote good compliance and address risks., • Conduct annual risk assessments and develop deep understanding of customer tax affairs., • Identify and tackle complex tax risks across regimes, particularly Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax., • Lead investigations into suspected non-compliance, using legal powers and technical tools appropriately., • Provide clear, accurate, and confident communication of HMRC's position on technical matters-both verbally and in writing., • Collaborate with colleagues across HMRC, including Risk & Intelligence Service and Fraud Investigation Service., • Prepare high-quality submissions to technical specialists, policy teams, and legal professionals., • Contribute to upstream compliance initiatives and projects aimed at closing the Wealthy tax gap., • Actively participate in team networks and subject matter forums to share knowledge and drive consistency, including providing technical support to colleagues across WMBC., • Strong technical expertise in personal tax regimes, particularly complex aspects of Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax, including anti-avoidance legislation., • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with high-net-worth individuals and their agents, promoting good compliance and addressing risks at pace., • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly and confidently convey your position on technical matters both verbally and in writing., • Experience of working collaboratively across teams and disciplines, including technical specialists, policy teams and legal professionals., • Strong analytical, risk assessment, and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify and respond to complex tax risks., • Benton Park View, Newcastle - moving to Pilgrims Quarter, Newcastle • Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), • Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (CIOT), • AIIT (including Paper 4*), • A Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) membership qualification including:, • Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales (ICAEW),, • Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS), • Institute of Chartered Accountants Ireland (ICAI), • Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), • Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), • Post Graduate full legal qualification - in taxation matters. • Pension - We make contributions to our colleagues' Alpha pension equal to at least 28.97% of their salary., • Family friendly policies., • Personal support., • UK nationals, • nationals of the Republic of Ireland, • nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK, • nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members of those nationalities with settled or pre-settled status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS) (opens in a new window), • nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members of those nationalities who have made a valid application for settled or pre-settled status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS), • individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible to apply for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020
