Job Description Job Description: We are seeking a Food Service Coordinator + AM Shift Cook to join the kitchen team at Sandy Hill Camp and Retreat Center. This role combines hands-on cooking with the coordination work that keeps a high-volume food service running smoothly including ordering, inventory, menu planning, and dietary accommodations. This is not a supervisory role, but you'll need to be self-directed and detail-oriented. You'll be feeding thousands of kids and adults each year in a place where meals are a significant part of the experience. The Role: You'll own the morning shift in the kitchen while handling the behind-the-scenes logistics that make it all possible. In summer, that means preparing breakfast and lunch for 600 campers and staff daily (Monday–Friday) with early morning shifts starting 4:30–6:30 AM. You'll have cook's assistants to assist you with cooking and meal prep. During spring and fall retreat season, you'll handle cooking breakfasts and special dietary needs for groups of 75–450 guests, including many weekends. For smaller groups you may cook solo; for larger groups you'll have support. Year-round, you'll manage food ordering, receive and put away deliveries, and develop menus. You'll have support from our team for coverage, training, and questions. We're also looking for someone who can help us move toward healthier options while keeping the kid-friendly classics campers love. Winter Flexibility (December–February): We intentionally reduce our retreats from December thru February. Summer is intense, and winter is our chance to breathe. We offer flexibility during these months: maintain full-time hours by contributing to facility projects (deep cleaning, painting, administrative tasks), or reduce your hours for a few weeks if you'd like a slower pace after a busy year. We'll work with you to find the right balance. Key Responsibilities: Cooking (AM Shift): • Prepare breakfast and lunch at scale (up to 600 in summer, 75 - 450 in retreat season), • Work early morning shifts in summer; weekend availability required during retreat season, • Maintain cleanliness and food safety standards in a commercial kitchen, • Clean up your cooking area, including pots, pans, and kitchen equipment (a separate team handles dining room dishware), • Manage food ordering, inventory, and receiving deliveries, • Lead menu planning, including developing healthier meal options, • Accommodate special dietary needs (allergies, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.), • Experienced: 3+ years of commercial or high-volume kitchen experience required, • Ownership Mentality: Takes initiative and follows through without needing to be managed, • Not Above Any Task: Willing to scrub pots, mop floors, and clean up after yourself—this is a hands-on role, • Detail-Oriented: Accuracy matters - from recipes to inventory to dietary accommodations, • Computer Comfortable: You'll use systems for ordering, inventory, and menu planning, • Reliable: Must be able to commute to our North East, Maryland location year-round, • Early Riser: Available for early morning start times, especially in summer, • Weekend Flexible: Spring and fall retreat season includes regular weekend work, • Team-Oriented: A servant leader who supports teammates and maintains a positive attitude, • Character-Driven: Must be a positive role model for youth with a clean background check, • Mission-Aligned: Comfortable working in a Christian, faith-based environment (no specific beliefs required), • Experience working in a camp, school, hospital, or retreat setting, • ServSafe Manager Certification or similar food safety training, • Knowledge of nutrition or experience with healthy/scratch cooking, • Skills in deep cleaning, painting, or administrative work (helpful for winter flexibility), • $20–$25 per hour based on experience, • Year-round employment with flexible hours in winter, • Health insurance, • 401(k) with employer match, • Paid time off and holidays, • Meals during programming seasons Nestled on 643 acres of unspoiled forests, fields, and beaches, Sandy Hill Camp and Retreat Center overlooks the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay near the quaint town of North East, Maryland.
