Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist Job Description The Phlebotomist collects and processes specimens from patients of all age groups, with a strong emphasis on pediatric patients, to support accurate and timely laboratory testing. This role requires advanced venipuncture skills, the ability to handle high draw volumes in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and a solid understanding of compliance and safety standards. The Phlebotomist also supports other laboratory procedures as needed and may assist with orientation and training of patient service technicians. Responsibilities • Collect blood specimens from patients of all age groups using venipuncture and capillary techniques, including pediatric blood collections and difficult draws in various clinical settings., • Review test orders carefully to confirm accuracy, completeness, and appropriate specimen requirements before performing collections., • Draw blood samples efficiently and safely while maintaining patient comfort, professionalism, and high-quality standards., • Process specimens according to established laboratory protocols, including labeling, packaging, and preparing samples for transport and testing., • Work closely with pediatric patients under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead, using age-appropriate communication and techniques., • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety regulations and consistently apply these standards in all phlebotomy and specimen handling activities., • Communicate the importance of compliance, safety, and proper procedure to colleagues and help reinforce best practices within the team., • Provide orientation and on-the-job training to patient service technicians as needed, sharing knowledge of proper collection, processing, and safety protocols., • Use laboratory information systems and related computer applications to enter, retrieve, and verify patient and specimen data accurately., • Meet or exceed expected draw volumes in outpatient settings (approximately 45–55 patients per 8-hour shift) and inpatient settings (approximately 20–30 patients per 8-hour shift)., • Demonstrate reliable attendance, professional behavior, and consistent adherence to facility policies and procedures., • Assist with additional lab-related tasks, including specimen processing, as directed by the lab supervisor or team lead., • Participate in training periods with full-time hours to become acclimated to facility workflows, including noc shift training as scheduled., • Adapt to schedule changes and on-call needs related to leaves of absence and vacations, while maintaining flexibility and responsiveness to department requirements.Essential Skills, • Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique from patients of all age groups., • Demonstrated experience with pediatric blood collections, including infant and neonatal draws., • Ability to perform difficult draws, including patients in medical office buildings and other challenging settings., • Comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards related to phlebotomy and specimen handling., • Ability to effectively communicate the importance of compliance and safety to other employees., • Skills necessary to provide orientation and training for patient service technicians., • High school diploma or equivalent., • Current CPT 1 license., • Computer proficiency, including experience working with a laboratory information system (such as Cerner or similar)., • Strong customer service skills and professional patient interaction., • At least six months of phlebotomy experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience., • Experience with infant and neonatal blood draws., • Experience working with pediatric patients., • Ability to meet high-volume draw expectations in outpatient settings (approximately 45–55 patients in an 8-hour shift)., • Ability to meet high-volume draw expectations in inpatient settings (approximately 20–30 patients in an 8-hour shift)., • Reliable attendance record and professional behavior., • Established venipuncture skills and phlebotomy knowledge without the need for basic phlebotomy training.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience in both outpatient laboratory settings (such as large reference labs) and inpatient hospital environments., • Previous hospital-based phlebotomy experience is a plus., • Experience working in acute or sub-acute care environments., • Ability to adapt to varying workflows, draw volumes, and patient populations., • Comfort working under supervision of a lab supervisor and team lead while also functioning independently., • Strong attention to detail in labeling, processing, and documentation., • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in a fast-paced clinical environment., • Interest in ongoing learning and development, supported by access to resources such as online learning platforms after a defined period of employment., • Commitment to ethical conduct, quality standards, and adherence to facility policies.Work Environment This position is based in a hospital laboratory environment, assigned to the SB facility, with a primary opening on the PM shift. Standard shift options at this site include an AM shift from 4:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., a PM shift from 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and a noc shift from 8:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., with this role focused on the PM shift. The role is currently on an on-call basis to support leaves of absence and vacations, with the potential for schedule changes in the coming months. Schedules are provided four weeks in advance to support planning. Training includes full-time hours to help the Phlebotomist become acclimated to the facility, with potential involvement in specimen processing and dedicated noc shift training as needed, typically starting at 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. The work involves frequent interaction with pediatric patients and collaboration with a lab supervisor and team lead. The environment is fast paced and requires the ability to handle high specimen volumes using laboratory information systems and standard lab equipment. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
