Job DescriptionJob Title: Mold Maker / Tool Room Technician – 1st Shift Job Description This 1st shift Mold Maker / Tool Room Technician role focuses on building, maintaining, and repairing molds in a small, clean prototype shop. You will perform conventional machining, mold assembly, benching, and polishing (up to pre-grain approval status) while collaborating closely with designers, programmers, and assemblers to ensure high-quality tooling and efficient production. The team welcomes experienced professionals and is open to training motivated entry-level candidates who show strong potential and a willingness to learn. Responsibilities • Perform benching and polishing of molds up to pre-grain approval status or 320/400 grit, understanding that diamond polishing is not required., • Assemble molds or support mold assembly by making pins and pillars, drilling water lines, preparing rough blocks, spotting, and polishing components as needed., • Troubleshoot tool and mold problems both in the concept phase and on the shop floor, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions., • Perform conventional machining operations including turning, drilling, threading, tool sharpening, surface grinding, welding, tapping, threading, and related toolroom work., • Carry out conventional machining, spotting, timing, completion of details, and final assembly of molds and dies., • Execute revisions, repairs, and upgrades to existing molds or dies to improve performance, extend tool life, or address quality issues., • Operate all machines and tools necessary to perform mold and die build and repair functions in a safe and efficient manner., • Review prints, drawings, and programs and develop an appropriate process plan to complete each job accurately and on time., • Maintain the quality of parts and tooling through careful inspection and clear communication with teammates about any issues or improvements., • Collaborate closely with designers, programmers, and assemblers to produce and repair the necessary mold components and ensure proper fit and function., • Identify process and equipment problems and proactively suggest improvements to enhance quality, efficiency, and safety., • Support the team by helping where needed beyond core duties, contributing to a collaborative and flexible work environment., • Accept and apply feedback from team members to continuously improve technical skills and work processes.Essential Skills, • At least 3+ years of tool room experience in a mold-making, toolmaking, or tool and die environment., • Hands-on experience with mold repair, including diagnosing issues and performing effective repairs., • Proficiency in polishing molds up to pre-grain approval status or 320/400 grit (no diamond polishing required)., • Experience with grinding operations, including surface grinding and related precision finishing work., • Ability to perform conventional machining operations such as turning, drilling, threading, tool sharpening, and tapping., • Capability to perform spotting and benching work on molds and tooling components., • Experience with mold maintenance and tooling upkeep to ensure reliable performance and longevity., • Ability to read and interpret prints, drawings, and programs to plan and execute jobs accurately., • Skill in operating standard toolroom machines and tools used for mold and die build and repair., • Strong team-oriented mindset with a willingness to help where needed and collaborate effectively., • Openness to feedback and a desire to learn and improve within a team setting.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Plastic processing experience is highly desirable., • 5–7 years of plastic injection molding experience is a strong plus., • Experience with rotary and 2-shot molding processes is beneficial., • Familiarity with bolstered tools and stack molds is an advantage., • Previous experience in a prototype or small-shop environment is helpful., • Willingness to learn additional processes and equipment as the shop expands and upgrades., • Entry-level candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and a positive attitude may be considered and trained.Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in a small, clean prototype shop operating on 1st shift. The facility is well-maintained and continues to grow, with plans to upgrade by adding two more injection mold presses by the end of the year. You will work with conventional machining equipment, grinding and polishing tools, and standard mold-making and toolroom machinery used for building, maintaining, and repairing molds and dies.
