Job Description We are seeking a hands-on Health Information Management (HIM) Director to lead the organizational and administrative operations of our Medical Records Department. This individual will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, accessibility, confidentiality, and compliance of patient health records while overseeing a team of HIM professionals. The HIM Director will play a critical role in supporting patient care, regulatory compliance, and revenue cycle management by ensuring medical records are complete, coded accurately, and processed in a timely manner. Key Responsibilities Department Leadership & Oversight • Direct and oversee all activities of the Medical Records Department., • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate departmental staff., • Ensure the quality of medical records by verifying completeness, accuracy, and compliance with standards., • Develop and implement processes (preferably through the EHR system) for secure record transfers to other providers and facilities., • Oversee and/or perform coding for all patient types (in-house and outsourced)., • Provide training and establish standards for accurate coding to optimize reimbursement., • Conduct internal and external coding audits and resolve coding discrepancies., • Perform and oversee regular internal chart audits., • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, federal, state, and accreditation standards., • Review claims data to ensure coding and documentation meet payer requirements., • Resolve denied claims through research and collaboration with providers and payers., • Partner with clinical and administrative staff to support quality care and compliance. Education: Registered Health Information Administrator or Registered Health Information Technician preferred Experience: Minimum of five years’ experience in Health Information Management, preferably in psychiatric services. Extensive knowledge of HIPAA required, state regulations for hospital facilities, EHR experience and coding knowledge ICD-10 Knowledge required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Medical & Coding Knowledge • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology., • Proficiency in ICD-9-CM (basic and advanced), ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems., • Familiarity with healthcare reimbursement methods and payer requirements., • Proficient in data entry, recordkeeping, and medical documentation management., • Advanced PC skills, including Windows OS, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel; experience with financial/payroll software (Kronos a plus)., • Strong mathematical ability for computations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages., • Ability to research, analyze, and resolve complex coding and billing issues., • Strong critical thinking skills to resolve complex coding, compliance, and documentation issues., • Ability to integrate multiple data points, facts, and statistics to identify solutions., • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly., • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, providers, payers, and other stakeholders., • Demonstrates tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity in handling confidential or high-stakes situations., • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, schedule, and complete tasks on time., • Skilled in managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously., • Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and compliance with policies., • Detail-oriented with a commitment to confidentiality, accuracy, and quality. Screening: Must successfully pass background check, drug screen, physical and be able to provide positive employment references. Physical Demands: With or without reasonable accommodations must be able to stoop, kneel, lift moving about in work area and throughout organization to accomplish task. Typing, data entry (finger dexterity) and ability to hold hands steady on keyboard when typing. Sit at extended period of time with erect posture. Reading forms/computer screens; express or exchange ideas orally and potentially loudly, accurately, or quickly; visually detect, determine, perceive, identify, recognize, judge, observe, inspect, assess; perceive the nature of sound with or without correction; perform repetitive motions of the wrist, hands, or fingers.
