Recognized as a Magnet Facility, VAPORHCS is a 1A complex facility with tertiary care referrals and is also a liver and renal transplant center serving veterans across the western United States. The anesthesiology service provides care to veterans undergoing a wide range of surgical and non-surgical procedures; the case mix for generalists includes general surgery, urology, orthopedics, vascular surgery, otolaryngology, podiatry, dental, gynecology, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, ophthalmology, plastics, transplant, plus non-OR anesthesiology support for electroconvulsive therapy, interventional pulmonology, gastroenterology, electrophysiology, general cardiology and interventional radiology. Cardiac surgery cases are reserved for those with cardiac anesthesia fellowship training or a significant amount of prior experience in practice, including perioperative TEE certification. Given our patient population, we do not have any obstetrics, pediatrics, or trauma at VAPORHCS. Generalists should be facile with line placement and regional anesthesiology procedures as well as with the management of medically complex patients undergoing a wide variety of procedures.
