The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) is seeking a Facilities Assistant to help maintain our shelters and grounds, assist with animal transport, and support daily operations that keep our animals — and our people — safe and supported. What You'll Do As a Facilities Assistant, you will: * Assist with daily animal transport between GBHS facilities * Maintain clean and safe surroundings — indoors and outdoors — throughout the day * Support groundskeeping duties, including mowing, weeding, pressure washing, etc. * Assist with basic maintenance tasks such as painting, fencing and kennel repair, basic electrical, basic plumbing and support the Facilities Manager as needed * Handle and care for animals as requested, ensuring cleanliness and proper identification * Communicate clearly and professionally with staff, volunteers, and the public * Help with transport of supplies, equipment, and donations across facilities * Perform other duties as assigned — with a positive attitude and commitment to the team What We’re Looking For Required: * A genuine passion for animal welfare and the mission of GBHS * High school diploma or GED equivalent * Strong work ethic, reliability, and a good sense of humor * Previous experience in facility maintenance or janitorial work * Clean driving record and ability to pass a motor vehicle background check * Must be able to lift 50 lbs (and up to 75 lbs with reasonable accommodation) * Willingness to work weekends, evenings, and on-call shifts as needed Preferred: * Experience operating commercial lawn equipment (e.g., zero-turn mower, weed eater) * Forklift certification * Experience driving large vehicles (25 ft or longer) * Animal handling experience in a shelter or kennel environment Why Work at GBHS? * Competitive pay and benefits * Opportunity to work with a mission-driven team * Be part of a long-standing, community-supported organization * Learn new skills, gain hands-on experience, and grow with purpose * Every shift helps change lives — for both people and animals Physical Requirements & Work Environment: This is a physically active position that requires standing, lifting, bending, and working indoors and outdoors. The environment involves working around animals of all types, cleaning supplies, potential allergens, and occasional exposure to bites or scratches. Ability to perform physical work involving standing for long periods, carrying animal crates, bending, scrubbing, mopping, walking quickly, reaching, squatting, lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds and lifting up to 75 pounds with reasonable accommodation; ability to work well in a team environment; ability to work weekends and evenings as necessary; meets minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook. Ability to stoop, bend, lift, clean, mop, and other such assigned duties with ease and in a timely fashion. Work Environment This work is performed in a high noise level area. Exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, zoonotic (human to animal) diseases, bites and scratches. Weekend shifts may be required. Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times. Must be able to work with and around animals of all types (cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, etc.). Exposure to conditions such as animal feces, urine, etc. and foul odors. May be exposed to animal dander, parasites and infectious diseases than can be carried and transmitted by animals.
